Lindsay is ready to saddle him up and ride so I am trying to get him ready for her. Today I got on his back and lied down lengthwise on his back I was alone so could not get pics of that but a while later we saddled him up second time and did transitions on line (at hand) in round pen. He did well.I took pictures while he rested since he was worked so hard  .Yawn. (the first time he found air and bucked and did aerial feats)No action today like he has had saddles on forever/He did used to get bareback pads and english saddles with stirups tied and low impact about bi-anually even ponied him once as yearling with english saddle on. But here he is today young stallion in the spring. This photo was taken today.*I will update and take some of Lindsay up.

Is that an old Simco saddle Ed??? Looks a lot like mine. And it's the first saddle I climb into on a new or young horse.
He's sure grown and is sure pretty! Love his soft eye (Big Al sure throws nice babies!)
I have a question on his cannons. Years ago, I remember reading - or being told - that in TBs, horses with short cannons made good runners and horses with long cannons made good jumpers. Have you ever hears that, and do you think it applies to distance horses too?

Carol...I've never heard of such a thing, and it doesn't really make sense to me....but, I've read a bunch of different articles that all basically say the same thing on circumference. The thicker the cannon bone the better...to withstand hardcore trail riding (distance, climbing, running, jumping, etc). I believe it was the measurement just below the knee, and anything that was 7 inches, or better, was ideal....
At the time I measured my Morgan, but I never got around to my Paso...the Morgan was over 7 inches....

What a handsome man he has turned into. Of course, he was always a beauty but he is really looking good. Love his build and size and of course, color.

I understand the The thicker the cannon bone the better,
but whats the deal with the measurement of 7 Inches, being ideal, why?
I want to run home and measure mine now, but I want to educate myself on the reason it even matters.
Where is Terri , she has all them charts. ;-)

The "experts" just say 7" is the ideal thickness *to begin with* for what they consider tough trailriding....anything below it is too "fine boned", and has a bigger chance of having issues. :new confused
When they say "tough" trailriding, they mean traversing mountains in rugged terrain all day while carrying one half of a 900lb elk.....nearly every single day.

What a beautiful boy! Yes, what a soft eye he has.
I love your cute barn, too. We've been thinking about building something small, simple. A place to store hay and a few stalls. I love it!

ok thats where I got stuck, I thought it was up and down mesurments, but its around the leg we look for 7"
gotcha.
ED, why did you mesure Up and Down?
what are you looking for?
Thanks for helping me understand this gang.
I am a tad slow.

circumfrance of cannons is the rage for stock horses small ones carrying large men/persons but in arabians and paso finos the density of bone is not a problem like that. there are articles in Endurance News and The Horse(journal) vet magazine explaining . The thing is that large bone does not nessesarily make the sounder tougher trail riding horses but does of course give one a place to look first. So Like Leo is almsot eight inches arouund lindsay said she checked and he is the sturdiest big boned one here. throws nice conformation i think too.
Now the reason I measured lengthwise is when they are born thier cannons are as long as they get(unless premature)so you can translate in inches how many hand tall they will be . I was sceptical so i checked babies and for the last few years it has proven true. The inches are on your adult horses how many hands tall they are / Like 14"&1/2"=14/2hh and if 15"& 3/4" that would be 15/3hands high)I checked our grown horse with age and it works there too.
Vet and vet tech showed me this.check your horses and babies too.takes a few years to verify and there must be exceptions.I don't know of any and niether did our vet, Yet.So it looks like he will go taller yet. The bump on inside of knee is very close to center of knee when you bend it and that is what I used.Center of knee in books I read is the point.
debbie the barn is 44'x36'4 stalls on corners no horse next to each other and feed/tack on one side and wash room on other.Rooms & stalls are 12'x12' all have water & power & lights .wash romm has microwave & old washer for horse blankets(dryer hook up & location but no dryer yet )& sink & shower & private tiolet .Feed room has 8 or so saddle racks likely 20 cupped bridle hangers and feed bins & shelf units for first aid etc & gear.Nio horse live in there but for bad weather(below 30 degrees). they like open areas paddock &corrals stalls with covered & waterers.
Little but sweet No hay inthere the hay stays on flat bed in one of the trailer garages with equipment.

The saddle on Zen is at least 50 years old. It was bought used by a friend of mine when he was growing up in Sierra Vista, AZ. The saddlemaker's stamp is no linger visible; too worn. It's definitely a roping saddle since it cants slightly forward. I don't like riding it for that reason and I don't like fenders on stirrup leathers (too stiff), but it's great for initial colt training. I will be in my McClellan the next time.
The "rule" on canon bone circumference I've heard is 8 inches per 1000# horse. I know for a fact that Leo, Pocita and Obi weigh between 780-850# depending on how much they are being ridden and competed. Their competition weights are 780-820#. We've weighed them many times on SERA's (Southeast Endurance Riders Association) scales. Yoda might go 800# and Staci is probably in the same range as Leo, Obi, Pocita as is Zen I imagine. I measured all my horses' canons tonight. Leo is 7 1/2 inches, Pocita, Obi and Zen 7 1/4 inches, Yoda
Thanks for all your nice comments about Zen. It's cool to know so many of us out thre are getting the young ones started this year. Terri, you're on next !

OOPS, Yoda and Staci got left out. Don't know what happened there. Computers, phooey! Any way Yoda's canons are 7 1/8 inches and Staci's 7 even. Plenty of bone on all of them.
paso chikkaaaa.

:D thank you paso chickaa/ He is not quite shed out of his winter hair but everyday with grooming we are getting closer his color is really coming out nicely too. Of course he needs his second bath/shower and when he is washed I have no doubt his true colors will be real nice.
welcome to the board! :welcome
