I just made a little post on another thread.
Memorable won AGAIN!!!
Arco came in second in championship, but won his class.

There is a new grey mare on the Fino scene from Colombia that took the mares championship. Caliber can tell us more about her. I don't know all the details on that horse yet. ;-)

LORI, salome de lusitnia is a FILLY she is not even 3 yet! she competed in filly 30-48 months, she got first second was Peregrina. Salome is daughter of EXTASIS, a really good stallion in colombia at this moment.
She was brought by his colombian owner toc omepte in Grand Prix but she got sold in quarentine, by besilu Collection, his new owner. She is amazing, steady and incredibly seroius in the arena. she will be giving us a lot to talk!!!!
She was ridden by his Colombian trainer, RAFAEL CLAVIJO, a yopung guy but he knows what he is doing with her.

Other highlights:
1. Tomento was a t the show but didnt do exhibition or comepte becasue he left quarentine 2 days before so he needs to rest.
2. Poseido la rosa, (imponente x la natacha) never was out either, everybody was waiting for him.
3. Imponente was shown at the party, he is doing as always, GREAT! but he looks completely dieffetent with that hernia, no long mane, very white, but thank god he is still with us! :D
4. Destello de la Divina, an excelent profeta colt, great presentation, too bad he jumped out of the souinding board and got excused for bad manners, he was winning the class, but he got scared.
5. la reina de la estancia, first time in show ring after nationals, and the virus that she got, she is doing great! Congratulations ALEI
6. temblor de Vitral, performamnce stallion, champion in las Grand Prix, was put of gait, and excused, the were not allowing even 1 step out of gait!\
7. Terremoto III, didnt compete but he was shown in thwe putside of the arena at night , he is doing really good, beautiful horse!
8. Arco iris is doing great with David, Congratulations!

that's what I saw at the show! ;-)

The judging was very strict. Many horses got counted off or excused for tail swishing also.

AJ

In confepaso rulinng they do not allow tail swishing, the allow only 8. In colombia is only 3!!!
All horses out of gait, little gallop, or anything got excused, some classes ended up with no horses at all! empty!!!!

That's too bad to hear.

While I agree that bad temper and expressions of discomfort or temper should be penalized--ears back and never moving, tail switching, hopping, etc. I do not agree with ZERO tolerance. It prohibits individualism that is so much part of the paso breed.

It is also a very thoughtless way to judge and by that I mean literally taking the thought process out of judging a horse. One mistake--gone! I can do that. Count tail swishes, look for the hop, walking off the board for one stride, horse with a minor refusal--so I'm a judge now?

So that leaves what? A mechanical preformance because if the horse blinks wrong he is no longer worthy of consideration? YET, I've gone to CONFEPASO performances out of the USA that have horses with no tail movement, on the board, not hopping, but cannot perform a circle correctly, drop their shoulders, skew their heads, overflex, drag their rears behind the vertical and WIN.

I've seen horses that are happy and excited move their tails--is that wrong too now? Do the judges bother to think about the difference? I bet not.

No, give me a horse that might get excited and not quite settled in his work. I'll take the one with a bit of life but can turn squarely, have the correct conformation to perform the gait with fluidity and balance.

There is a place between tolerating bad performances such as PFHA and not even recognizing the horse as a living expression such as CONFEPASO. Both are ignoring the fundamental aspects of the breed. Somewhere between the two is the artful expression of paso fino.

Bingo. That sums it up right there. Negative judging is a very easy way to judge and causes for very little difference of opinion from the spectators. But is it fair to make horses behave like machines? And is it good to reward mediocrity? As that is what this method of judging does. I agree with it to an extent. I was glad to see a lot of horses being excused for lack of gait. What happens when you eliminate every horse that makes a mistake is that the horses that are left standing at the end are very easy to place. If they are not, you just work them until they make a mistake. It is a very easy way to judge and most anyone who knows the basics of the breed could judge the class easily. The problem is that it does not take into consideration the quality of the animal. Only the training of the animal. I am not at all saying that excellent horses did not win at this show as they did so, please just don't go there. But the overall system of judging favors consistency over quality of the animal. If that is what people want, fine. But I personally would rather see positive judging that allows for a great horse to make a mistake and not get thrown out of the ring. I prefer to judge on quality first and mistakes second, not the other way around.

I LOVE THE COLOMBIAN JUDGING, THAT WHY HE HAVE THE CHAMPIONS WE HAVE! WE DO NOT ALLOW MISTAKES, TO BE A CHAMPION WE NEED TO LOOK TO WHATEVER IS CLOSEST TO EPRFECTION!

SORRY, CANDICE I DO NOT AGREE WITH YOU " I AGREE WITH ZERO TOLERANCE"
NO TROCHA, NO HOPS, NO BAD MANNERS, NO TAIL SWISHING(HERE IS 8 IN COLOMBIA IS 3), NO LITTLE GALLOP, ETC.......

Also... I wholeheartedly agree with Candace and Cindy on the negative judging aspect. The best scenario is somewhere in the middle for sure... some marks off for mistakes, certainly, but judge the whole picture and performance.

This show is more of a combo between Confepaso and PFHA rules.

I have to say one thing........ I did not see any horse being excused for tail switching............... Edit: to add: UNLESS THEY WHERE DOING THE LAMBADA :bad bannana

Also I notice a Pinto horse signed up for a class.......

Also Memorable took the championship....... and he does not meet the alsada.....(HEIGHT)

So it was cleared to me that both rules where accounted for.

NOW!!!!!!! horses that spooked or out of gait......... YES THOSE HORSES WHERE PENALIZED...........

I did notice a few times they mentioned points off for tail swishes, however the horse still placed. So it was not excessive, just gave them a lesser placement in the line up.

They also took points off for a lot of movement in the croup when doing the placements.

I think PFHA needs to USE the rule to excused a horse when is not in gait. VERY IMPORTANT!

Lori, caliber,
did you hear the explanation of the judge when memorable got 1st and Arco iris 2nd in the championship????

The judged said one of them (arco Iris) "moved up" the tail twice ,it was counted as tail swiching and that's why he got 2nd, Memorable was perfect.

PS: "moved up" I say that because it wasn't swishing it was like going up,, I dont know if you undertsand what I mean. :-?

Adriana, My opinion, both horses where incrediable!!!!!!! to say the least.

At that point the JUDGES must put in account so many factors...... that in my opinion Memorables was representing the FINO better alot more desplasao than Arco.........

But the championship could have been either or..............

I really truly liked DESTELLO......... wowow...... too bad for that minor incident.

I did see a horse excused for swishing as well. It was a colt and he was not swishing all the time but enough times that they excused him. I agree with using the swishing as a penalty as in the Arco/Memorable example but I think it can be taken too far when using it to excuse a horse instead of penalize. I have heard of horses being excused for swishing in the lineup.

I did like that they were excusing a lot of horses for not being in gait but it bothered me that there were SO MANY that WERE NOT GAITING. I watched one class come in and I did not know what class it was and thought they had added trocha classes for a minute. Out of that class of about 11 horses there were 3 horses left at the time of placements and that was as it should have been. That's kind of sad, don't you think?

Brigitte
04-02-2007, 07:20 PM
There's a horse too who wouldn't swish his tail but would raise it an inch or two and drop it again. He got excused. I think the CONFEPASO rules are good and strict. The maximum for tail swishing here is 6.
However being excused for tail swishing while standing I think is stupid.

I am going to try and say this without it starting the next world war but ya'll know how that goes. I'm going to say it anyway and let's just hope that those who would respond will remember that we've had that discussion before and this is not about that discussion, please.

OK, here goes, holding my breath. That horse that was raising the tail and lowering it most likely had a cut tail and were it not cut the horse would have been swishing the tail, not just raising it. That is the same thing that Arco does but most likely he did not do it as much as the horse that you are refering to did. Also, the horses can be cut to not swish the tail without making a dead tail that would get the horse excused thus having a horse that, unaltered, would be swishing but because he is altered is not swishing. Soooo, is it really doing the breed any good to excuse for swishing when one can artificially make the horse not swish when naturally he would swish?

Still holding my breath and hoping that people can behave like adults for a change and realize that I AM NOT HAVING THAT discussion. This is a different discussion and has nothing to do with how anyone personally wants to see a horse's tail. OK, here goes.

AJ
04-02-2007, 08:07 PM
candice. just to be clear. Arco Iris in the line up, eas moving his tail like a regular not altered tail horse..that means tail is not dead

Caliber, I agree that memorable deserved the 1st place, Arco is doing really good!Congratulations to David!

Hey AJ,

Not sure if you meant me or Cindy, but no matter.

All I'm saying is, judging isn't simple and can't be made so clinical either.

Ideally we should all aim for horses ridden and judged by horsemen that know the breed. A horseman knows the difference between a horse slobbering because he is on the bit and enjoying the taste and one trying to spit the bit out. The difference between a horse that switches the tail in discomfort or anger and one that will move the tail for balance or simple expression at work. The difference between a horse concentrating on his rider with his ears back and one that does so because he hates his work.

First we tried to dummy down the intelligence and brios of this breed and since the horse insists on being smart and sensitive anyway, now we are trying to penalize him for the same and worse, dummying down a judge's decisions.

HOP! OUT!
SKIP! OUT!
WAVING TAIL! OUT!
MISSTEP! OUT!

I believe we are seeing more horses out of gait not because of the lack of breeding, the lack of phenotype, or the lack of quality. The same causes for a horse to do the above all come down to the lack of preparation for the task required--training.

PLEASE, those who insist that all pasos must be smooth as glass under saddle, please refrain from the typical out cry about how pasos are born to gait and are expected the do the same carrying alien head gear, a saddle and a person. Of course they won't. They must learn to do what is "natural" with unnatural trappings and burdened with added weight. Admit it takes time for a young horse to learn all about this and go back to it's more natural carriage. In fact, I see many horses trying to do just that and are not allowed to by it's rider because then the head isn't carried "right" or the feet aren't fast enough or the stride too long.

I agree with you Cindy. I think when you put too much emphasis on a quiet tail you create an environment that will make people do unnatural things to a tail to make it not move... which is surely worse than a swish. I think you have to look at the horse and judge it on whether it appears to be an angry swish or just a habitual flip (like you see all the time in dressage competition upon receiving a cue) and judge accordingly.
I would like to see less emphasis on counting swishes and judge willingness to work and appearance of good temperament in a more general fashion.
