Forward? like in your face, pushy, unrespectful? That's not safe, sometimes hard to deal with. Need's expirenced trainer to work em in R pen. Same issue as; http://kinseyhorsetraining.com/article.php?story=spoiledhorses

Or forward in the manner of being reved up and raring to go? that just needs controlled by careful training, but it makes for a good show winner in some circles.

TWH are wonderful horses! Or at least I think so based on my limited experience with Stetson. Congratulations.

Reuben...I'm thinking this horse is probably a big mover and fast. That is what is meant by "forward." Lots of people are intemidated by a horse that moves out like a cannon.

ya ditto,
I am sure he is a people pleaser just has not figured out the person to please yet!

Yep as Carol said..he is a puppy dog on the ground...great manners..moves when you try to mount and head up and very lifted and animated in the front...just a BIG BOLD mover..yes will scare a beginner..

This is what she wrote me about him..

I just got finished cleaning some tack and boots for tomorrow, am beat. Here
are two pictures of him. I was riding in a bareback pad.....yeah, there is a
sign of a crazy horse! He has a great back for the bareback thing. I took
him on a trail ride 3 weeks ago with just the bareback pad. Through some
thick woods to. He really isn't a bad horse. Just need some retraining from
his former show days. I have NO PROBLEM getting him to leave the barn or his
friends. I have no reason to lie about him, it isn't like I am trying to
sell him to you. For a confident rider that doesn't get harsh, he is a ball
to ride. He does a stepping pace. Moves like a ex-padded horse, but very
flashy. I hope you can do good by him and find him a good home someday. I
don't care what you make out of it, I hope you do of course :0), but I know
that you are an animal lover and do what is in their best interest. I will
see you Monday unless there are any changes to this weekend. Jimmy prefers
we not try and squeeze it in on Easter Sunday. Hope you have a great
weekend! See you soon.

wow, he looks nice. I have never ridden a TWH either, but have always wanted to try it. I have never liked how they are shown because it looks so un natural. But the trail TWH are nice. They are so much more beautiful when natural! Looks like you will have fun with him! Vence will be jeoulous!

The photos don't show a long overstride. looks more even and smooth.

I have to judge several walking horse classes at the end of his month at an all-breed show. I've ridden one, and seen them as flat-shod at all-gaited shows and also the big-lick at the Celebration Show in TN.

Best wishes with this one... he looks fine to ride in the photo, just tall.

Well, she says he does a stepping pace, like a former show horse. So, he may not be as smooth, but he sure is flashy! Great carriage. Looks like she has a bit of a hold on him. Wonder what he does when you give him some slack.
I love TWHs. Have had 3, and they were wonderful horses.

When TWH breeders breed for a big lick horse, they breed for a pace, so when the big shoe package is put on the hesitation caused by the exaggerated high step will make the horse do a "walk".

Plantation and flat-shod bred horses will gait at a "walk" from birth.

Big lick horses can gait correctly unshod or flat shod if you start out with a flat-shod shoe and heavy chains on the front, and as the horse learns what he is to do, and gets muscled correctly, you lighten the chains and then lighten the shoes. But the horse may still be a little pacy, due to its breeding.

OK what do you want to know

Big lick horses are the ones that do the exagerrated high front end step, and the big overstride in back. The shoes are called a "package" They have at least 6 inches of hoof/shoe combination on the front end and lots of weight (there is no weight limit, the horse can be carrying 5 lbs or more per foot. They also usually have a metal strap built into the shoe which helps to hold the package on the hoof. The strap goes from the back of the package and around onto the hoof about halfway up near the coronary band. When barefoot they tend to do a pace rather than a walk. The high stride in the front will cancel out the pace because the horse lifts the front feet so high there is a moment of hesitatin before the horse puts the foot down again. If the horse "walked" (did a flat walk or running walk) without shoes, the package would cause it to not have a good walk, again because of the package. These horses also do the "rocking chair" canter, which is encouraged by the rider "picking" the horse's head up each stride.

Flat shod horses have weighted shoes, but not the built up hoof/shoe combination. By weighted shoes, I mean about a pound or more per shoe on the front. Also, the hind feet are at a much lower angle than the front feet. The horse does a flat walk, a running walk and a canter, but these gaits are not so big or showy as the big lick horses.

Plantation walkers usually wear regular keg shoes and have lots less action in the gaits but still do a flat walk, a running walk and a canter. The best way to keep one of these horses in gait is as the flat shod horses---higher angle in front, lower in back to encourage a big overstride in back.

Does that help? I will try to answer all your questions...

diswick I know the girl that has him does NOT like the TWH show people so I bet he is normal shod..

My other question is will he sell fast and for good money.. my main concern

diswick
04-08-2007, 01:58 AM
Appy, I would have him reset to enhance his gait before I show him to anyone. Put him at around 54* in front and 52* in back, which will stop some of his "pacey" step. Pacey is NOT a good thing in TWHs unless they have a big lick package. She does mention he is an ex-show horse, and that is probably why he is pacey.

Anyone who knows anything about TWHs will be turned off by the paceyness. So get him trimmed first and wait a few days so he gets used to the change in angles. ANd ride him up and down hills, which will help get him in gait and out of the pacey movement.

Now for another question for you. Does his head nod while he is doing a running walk? TWH people look for a good active head nod while the horse is in gait. It is very desirable for the horse to have a good nod to be placed in the ring. Oh and a plain head is not a bad thing in TWHs. I cannot really tell from the pics if his head is plain or not but if it is that is ok.

How big is he? And how old? I paid $2500 for a 3 year old plantation mare (15.1) way back in 94 who was green as grass. Got $2500 for her 3 years later when I sold her. By that time she had been shown and was well trained. If he is 15.0 or bigger and is not too pacey, I am sure he is wotrh that much. Of course, someone who knows nothing about TWHs will not know what to look fo, and so may not care that he has a "pacey" step, and may be concerned about his head "shake".

Oh and they are usually very mellow horses, not a lot of brains (kind of dumber than a rock kind of horses generally, tho not all are), they won't get fussed up about things like an Arab, TB, or a baroque type horse will. I would consider them a cold blooded horse...I wouldn't expect any brio-type actions/reactions from him.

Appy - If you wanna turn him over fairly fast, let me know. If he's sound I can find a buyer if you don't want too much - just a decent profit. Look, if he is gaiting don't screw with his feet. PM me if you like.

If he is an ex show horse and still seems to have the wonkyness of gait they like, target padded show people. They won't care if he is not gaiting properly right now since he will once he has a package back on him.

We boarded with a big black TW stallion and WOW could he move. The ride has a lot more float than most paso finos. They gait better in sand by the way. The owner showed him flat shod. He was Merry Go Boy lines - don't know how close. But let me tell you - that boy was forward, hard headed and could jump to the moon. He also had a "thing" for his round bale - but that's another story. He was so ariel he managed to get his shoe caught in the wire on the window at the top of his stall and just lay there with his leg way up in the air until I ran and got some hoof nippers and cut the wire in the window.

I was crazy about him but he was scary. His owner used to exercise thoroughbreds so she was no wimp but one day he threw a bucking fit and would not stop and she finally tried to jump off near a round bale of hay but didn't quite make it but she wasn't badly hurt - just a little sore. I would do a lot of stopping and even teach him clicker training for stops as well as the one rein stops and the run into the fence or side of the barn stops because from the description I'd be willing to bet he will take off with the rider right now on occasion.

We used to ride around the block with our TW buddy and it took all her strength with a long shank bit to keep him at a reasonable speed. Oh - and he had a pretty head but the foundations TW's have seriously ugly heads but they are wonderful horses. We've been hanging out with TW owners for 50 years and a cousin shows big lick TW's which we hate by the way but the old time REAL TW's are worth their weight in gold.

Good luck finding him a great home. They are wonderful horses!!

My hubby's horse is a TWH. He is 15.2 and black with a strip down his face and one white sock. He has no shoes on at the moment, as do neither of my paso's, he is just shoed for trail rides in the summer. He is Great. We bought him from a person that does like you do. Gets horses and then resells them. Ours can move really smart and he also can keep up with my Ladybug, but put him in the lead and he is as slow as molasses walking the trials  He is on the lookout for the bear!! But he is a good fellow and my hubby just loves him to pieces. I am sure you will not have any trouble selling him. Ours also was an ex show horse given up through a divorce, or so it was tolad to us. Keep us posted.
