We see his name on a few pedigrees (grandson or gr-grandson), it does not seem to be the spotlighted or featured line of the horse.
What became of his sons and daughter here - what was their best feature or characteristic in the breeding shed?

Castellano figures heavily in my Rojo Tejas's pedigree. Although I have been told he favors Capuchino, I, myself, think he resembles his great grandsire, Castellano, more. Even down to the one white rear foot.
Red's mom is a double Castellano granddaughter and her most remarkable characteristic, other than being beautiful... ;-) , is her calm, easy temperament which she passes on to each and every one of her foals, and as Red seems to be doing also.
Castellano is double bred Resorte III. His sire is Resorte IV.
Are you aware that Resorte IV also had one white rear foot? ;-)

Castellano

Darlene Wohlart used to have a headshot of Castellano on her website that was SO Redman....I looked and couldn't find it on there anymore.

My Paso Fino stallion, Candeloso de Casta, is a son of Castellano.

Candeloso just turned 19 years old this past Thursday. He is a beautiful red chestnut with a chestnut and flaxen mane and tail. He very much resembles Castellano in appearance. What I really love most about Candeloso is his personality. He is The King. Very noble and regal but with a super sweet temperment. He's a perfect gentleman and professional. He was my very first Paso Fino and he has taught me so much. Quite the Schoolmaster.

Hope this helps.

I rode a performance Castellano daughter at the de Casta farm. I was told she could be a bit difficult and hard-headed. Well I would just say she wouldn't be for a novice rider, but I enjoyed riding her ...alot of brio and drive. My opinion would be it would depend upon what line Castallano was crossed on.

I have a Castallano granddaughter ...more pleasure type, mostly willing, and smart, but can be hardheaded about a few things if it isn't exactly her idea first. Mine has his compact body type.

Castallano competed at the 1984 Natls with his famous sibling, the then younger Capuchino.

Hi Carol--I do have photos of him. I will try to post them later. His picture is also going to be in Diego Bravo's new book on Paso Fino horses, but I haven't seen it yet.

Lynn--Candeloso does have lots of brio and he does like to make his own decisions at times. That's part of what I love about him. He's a "thinking horse" and I respect that in him. You know that saying "discuss it with a stallion..." We've had our discussions....but he's good natured about it. I was never sure if it was his bloodlines coming out or the fact that he was/is a stallion or maybe both. Like I said, he was my first Paso (actually my first horse ever). He has a very special place in my heart.

His gait has been described to me as "what fino was 15 years ago". If he were shown today I think it would be in performance? His mane and tail are gorgeous. Again, I don't know if that comes from the Resorte line or not.

Hope this helps.

To me Castellano was the better of the two--for my personal tastes. Castellano was more fluid, more graceful, more isochronic, quieter in all ways. Capuchino was more athletic, more presence, quicker, shorter.

I'm not familiar with many Castellano offspring, but I do love one in particular, Adorno de Luistana, who is in the shadow of his half-brother Nevado. He was Reserve Champ Pleasure and another reason why he is ignored. But again, my personal opinion, I've seen few that are as correct, as quiet, with brios and ability. Because I still have a Nevado breeding to complete, I've yet to use Adorno but I have every intention of doing so.

I've heard Castellano produced strong minded horses, but I like that too. Dr. Martinez was one of the few breeders to use him extensively and I've seen good products with the crosses.

I actually prefer the Castellano offspring to three generations..I totally perk up when I see him on pedigrees, because I know the certain things I like will probably be there.

Pistol is a grandson, and one of my favorite stallions is a son. Were I to get into breeding, very unlikely, but were I to, then I'd love to find granddaughters or even great grandaughters to breed back to him.*edited to add breed back to Pistol's father...not Pistol* and add headshot:

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k193/britzlove/My%20Horses/Talento1.jpg

That's all I have of him I'm afraid. Seeing him in person is better.

Another note, Pistol's father I totally contibute with alot of his good characteristics, though his mother provided size, body type, his refinement and gait absolutely do not come from her. I have a headshot of his daddy, and he's one of the first I visit when I'm at the breeder's place. Candice I know may know him.

I sure like Candeloso, do you breed to outside mares? He's lovely, and of course I'm of the thinking that Redman does look more like Castellano than Capuchino, and from his offspring I'm betting he got other good stuff as well.

It's really a toss up between El Classico and Castellano for my favorite. They'd almost have to share the top spot...just my opinions.

Thank you everyone. Here are a couple of head shots of Candeloso. They aren't great photos and he has his eyes shut in the one, but it gives you an idea.

Carol, I went to your website and I do see the family resemblance between Rojo and Candeloso. Rojo is very beautiful!

Candice, did Adorno de Lusitania used to be at United Paso Finos? I thought they had a stallion son of Castellano but I don't see him on their website?

Britzlove, I will breed Candeloso to outside mares. When I bought him about 4 years ago I thought about having him gelded because I didn't really know if I wanted a stallion. But my trainer strongly urged me not to geld him because he was one of the end of a very good bloodline. I guess there aren't that many surviving stallion sons of Castellano left anymore. My trainer said that alot of the old bloodlines are being lost and it would be a shame to geld Candeloso because of that reason. He is also a very well behaved stallion which is another reason I kept him a stallion. I am planning on breeding him to my mare at some point. But, I would certainly offer him for stud if someone wanted to add some of the Castellano blood to their line.

Here is my Castellano great grand daughter (dam's side) Contrapunto (Sire side)

She definately has a strong mind, but under her attitude she is really very sweet. I love her attitude, she is a keeper.

Thank you. He does have lots of hair which I'm reminded of each time I have to de-tangle it. Oh well.
Cristy, your mare is so pretty! Is that a flaxen color mane she has? I love that combination--red chestnut with flaxen mane and tail.

I am posting the following for Beveryly Frick. Her text is in the quote box. The first picture is Replica (Carol's "Red" Rojo).

Loved the photo's of Candeloso! Beautiful stallion.

I appreciate that Carol U directed me to this thread. In a few hours we will be heading off to show a Castellano granddaughter (3 year old schooling Fino fillies). She turned 3 last week. Not sure she is ready but the show is close. Think she has over 250 Bella Forma points. The dam is La Replica de Casta (Castellano) x Prometido de Selecta. Replica was a National High Point Classic Fino Mare and is 18 or 19 now. She is in foal to Cataclismo de Casta (Temblor de Terremoto x a Castellano daughter). She will reside at Dr. Martinez's until she foals and will be bred back to Cataclismo next year. Replica is the dam of several winning foals including El Diamante de Capuchino (Capuchino) who won the Breeders Sweepstakes in '03 and overall 3rd place in the Fabulous Fino Futurity in '05. Diana, owned by Anni Howell, has won fino Championships as well. Other foals have done some winning but I don't have any records of them. One of her daughters by Capuchino went to Germany. Even though Replica has a lot of white, very little, if any comes through to her foals. However, I've bred her to mostly solid horses. Replica is such a special mare - she is electric under saddle. You can not take your eye off of her.

The mother of Rojo Tejas (El Picaflor de Casta) is my favorite mare "La Castellana de Casta". She will have a May foal by Petrolero (Charlie/Capuchino/Castellano, etc.). Her colt in '06 was sold at 3 weeks and went to Ohio for a breeding stallion. La Castellana has something about her that is so special that you just want to love on her. She is almost fino, very quick and smooth. A friend has been cow sorting, riding her at the Houston Airport as a Ranger and done a little Mounted Shooting with her. She seems to love soccer as well. Such a special mare and a good producer.

A former judge, told me "that Capuchino and Castellano (1/2 brothers) looked alike, that they were hard to tell apart when he went to a barn in Florida many years ago". This judge had bred to Capuchino and said "he didn't know why he didn't breed to Castellano". Castellano died young so there were not a lot of offspring to start with. I had a video (someone borrowed? it) of Capuchino and Castellano in the same Colombian show but different Fino classes. They both won their big class. Dr. Martinez (de Casta) has bred some fantastic horses and lucky for us that he did utilize Castellano.

Oh, Graciela (Gracioso) is expecting El Diamante's first foal next month. This is exciting to me!

Sorry if this sounds like bragging but I really do like Castellano and I LOVE that line. Now pray that my filly can/will contain her BRIO at the show!

And here is her son, Rojo Tejas, pictured after winning the West Coast Champion Bella Forma Colt Award in 1999, in Burbank, CA, as a two year old. He also won Reserve West Coast Champion Bella Forma Stallion that same year, and again in 2001. Red had earned his TOP by the time he was three years old.

Hey Britz, I think I know the Castellano son you are refering to.

I don't know what happened to Adorno at United Pasos. He was managed by United but he did not reside at the farm. He was also for sale and may have been sold recently. Too bad he doesn't get more attention with his bloodlines.

Your trainer did good pasox3! That's a nice looking horse and I really like the looks of his hindquarters. Nice angles and croup.

Thank you! Diego Bravo worked with him. And, believe it or not, Candeloso, (stallion son of Castellano) was used as a lesson horse at Diego's riding school. I left him there with them until I brought him up here to NW FL. I thought he was such a great Ambassador for the breed and wanted to share him with others until my farm got finished. Of course he wasn't "the beginner's" horse, but lots of novice paso riders did ride him and got to experience the thrill and excitement, his brio, and gait, etc. He is so noble.

Candeloso will be in Diego's new book but I haven't even seen which pictures will be in it. There were several choices. I can't wait to see the book!

I have a question for ya'll (please let me know if this needs to be in another topic) but I'm planning on breeding my mare, a palomino, to Candeloso. Her sire is Oro de Piloto (Piloto de Resorte Cuarto x Navidad de J-dos-C) and her Dam is La Aristocratica de Casta (El Picaflor de Casta x Africana). And Candeloso (Castellano x Condela). Question: Do you think this is too much Resorte? I would really love to continue the Castellano lines and this would produce a grand-son or daughter.

I'd love to see the video of Capuchino and Castellano, too. It is a shame Castellano died young.
