So...I'm interested to get a poll for what the most common types of Paso headgear are. I think people assume we only use special bits, but I don't think that's necessarily the truth. So share!

I ride in a soft Columbian Bosal (by that I mean it's totally different from a western rawhide bosal...it's like a Jaquima without the pisador basically). If someone smart on here knows a different technical name for it, you can call me on the carpet ;-)

Post away!

I ride with a leather side-pull--rounded leather nose band, rings on each side for reins, and leather curbstrap. MagicAl loves it, so I see no need for a bit.

Depends what I'm doing and the horse. Usually have a bit, then on young horses to reins, bit and jaquima. They can be ridden with jaquima alone but on the trails I ride with 100 foot bluff drops, I like the security of having a bit.

I usually ride with a halter and leadrope, but Ickis has been comfortable in a double bridle before, when we were in dressage. Now, I can either use the halter on him, or just loop a rope around his neck and go.

Zumi requires either a halter, a reinsman bit, or a plain leather jaquima- nothing la-ti-da, like the studs, rolled rawhide, or whatever. Just plain flat leather.

I was about to say "a Troxel Legacy helmet"...
Until I realized you were talking about the HORSE. ;-)

Just about every rideable horse on the place (which is a total of about three) is ridden in a good ole cowboy sidepull. Here's my gelding, Nevare. Nevare is actually push-button...you can literally ride by the seat of your pants...never needing to touch a rein.

I had to answer "other" because I am starting my kids in rope halters, and now discovering the joys of a rope hackamore, will graduate them to jaquima and eventually paso bits, may use snaffle in between dunno - I think the bits look cool, I am a bit of a traditionalist, and there are plenty of soft bits even tho they look like torture, hehehe. Exceptions: Encantador will end up in a Myler curb, he adores that bit. Lucero is currently working/relearning in a snaffle due to her specific issues, but will probably go on to a paso bit. She s'ucks in a jaquima and has never been bitted, so snaffle is working nicely for her. If she didn't gait with her head any old where, this might not be an option!

P.S... a Kimberwicke is NOT a curb bit.

I use a bossal and a mylar bit, which I guess is considered a curb bit lol :D on my stallion
but on all the other pasos I use columbian bits, such as the luna bits. mostly spoon bits. I have also used a rubber bit before

Useless trivia: Some kimberwickes are also called uxeter.

Terry-

Kimberwicks are curbs if you use the lower rein attachment. But they can also be used on a snaffle attachment.
