We were hit by what appears to be a small tornado last night...quite a bit of damage, trees uprooted, but all the ponies and us are ok. I will try to take photos later...but is so windy out there right now that will be awhile.
I'm just thankful that no one was hurt...shaken up but not hurt.
More later!
Now to begin the cleanup and don't know quite where to start. :-?

Came in to grab a bite to eat before attempting cleanup. It's kind of like, where do you start? Insurance man has been called. The haybarn may need to be totally replaced but it was an old one anyway...good news is the hay that was wet last night is now dry from the wind.
I was wrong about no horses being hurt ...one mare is pretty cut up but essentially ok...probably hit by flying tin....one mare is limping on one front leg. Will look at them closer and doctor them once the metal is picked up out of the pastures. A few neighbors sustained minor damage too...but nobody seriously hurt as far as I know yet.
Funny...they say in the case of a tornado to turn the horses out...well, the two most seriously hurt were turned out in a big pasture. Go figure...

I hate twisters. They are so completely unpredictable -- and so powerful. Glad I don't live at the lake anymore. They seemed to be drawn to it.

OMG, glad you are OK. And hope you find that any injuries are just minor to the horses.

Carol,
I'm so sorry to hear about the twister. Hope those horses aren't seriously hurt.
I wonder if the reason for saying they are best outside is for fires and collapsing buildings. I'm sure there are no definative studies. Just like anything else....you do your best and pray.
Keep us updated. You'll be in my prayers tonight.

So glad everyone is not hurt bad. Was you awake when the twister came thru? How scarely. When i lived in michigan was had alot of tornado warnings. One hit about 1 mile down the road at a amish house. They were really shook but no one was hurt. Did you have any warning?

I have photos now, but am too tired to post them. I spent most the day picking up pieces of my haybarn in the adjoining pastures, picking up wood with nails sticking out of them, picking up broken limbs, etc....Doug was busy cleaning the fallen trees out of Rojo's run and his son, Devante's, run. Devante's pen was trashed and we found him running loose in the barnyard. Not a mark on him though.
Several people stopped by to see the damage, and our kids came to help with the cleanup. You would not believe how much we got done in one day, and tomorrow is to be nice (had a stiff cold wind today) so we should finish all but the big stuff.
Yes, Andrea, we were awake...we had fed early (we normally feed at 8 p.m.) because we knew the weather was going to change. It hit a little after eight...Doug was in the shower the whole time. I was in the kitchen with my Sheltie, and it sounded like a bomb exploding and then things started hitting the house, and I could hear limbs cracking and horses whinnying. It was over as quickly as it started and we made our way out in the rain to check all the horses. By the light of the flashlight, it looked awful.
By daylight, we found there was very little damage to the house, just some flashing on the roof, but the most severe damage was to the haybarn which lost a third of the roof and blew out the back wall, the tack room which lost a portion of the roof, and the new barn had two doors blown out and damaged. Plus countless trees that were either uprooted or split in half or simply sheared off halfway up their trunk. It is very easy to see the path of the twister...no more than 25 yards across...
No, we had no warning...we have a weather radio and it had come on with the tornado watch but all the activity was reportedly to the north of us. I'm so thankful...it could have been so much, much worse.
