Many farms lost babies this year. Sadly our family lost one and others did too as well. This baby was the one I was looking forward too. Has anyone else lost any babies this year???
2 babies here but one was aborted by the horse and one suffacted in the placenta.

I personally dont consider reabsorbtion a miscarriage. The other thing you have to look at are all the other stats..age of mares, how many cycles bred..where there any cultures done on mares prior to breeding..US's done pre breeding to see if there were any problems such as excessive fluid or twins..US's done at 18 days ..etc etc. There are many mare management practices that can have an effect in the percentages of viable foals. I will say this ..PLEASE do not make statements like this
Kelly Cox with Whinning Colors lost many babies as well.
An open ended statement ( we do not know how many mares were bred..how many foals actually hit the ground Were there outstanding circumstances that caused an abortion storm etc etc ) such as this can really put someones farm and/or their managment practices in a bad light.I do not know Kelly Cox or Winning Colors personally and I am sure you meant no harm in this statement. But if I was thinking of sending a mare to that farm to get bred or to foal, I sure would have a lot of questions now and want to see a lot of stats...

Brittany;
I do not appreciate a statement like this made by someone who has only been on this farm once last winter. Facts are facts, but someone not related or involved in this farm has no right to make such claims.
To put the record straight although it should not concern any one here these are the facts. We had 15 embryos done of which 5 were reabsorbed. In which consulting with other large farms they also had a 1/3 reabsorbtion rate in their embryos-taking nothing away from the vet or complaining. Of the foals carried to term only one was lost in foaling. It was a distocia that I did not get out in time. When I finally got the filly out she was dead. The other foal we lost was a filly who was two months old and became very depressed. We had vets working on her and the day she showed good improvement she died. A necropsy was performed and the cause of death could not be found. All of her blood values were normal and her necropsy and samples sent off to for testing returned with completely normal results.
With 38 healthy foals on the ground, I do not believe that anyone can state that we lost many foals. We never like to lose a foal that is why we use foal alert, have all the mares in stalls with straw and mount a video camera on the stall for foaling.
Please becareful what you say for it could be thought of as slander. It is never a good idea to make claims without knowing the facts.

Kelly,
Same stuff happend here with our embryos, not much is known of embryo transfers as it is basically new to the horse world ( I think ) so till there is a way for the recipient mare to keep the baby till full term this will happen.
38? thats great! Can't wait till your next champion! How are Arco's babies looking? seen one and looked great! congrats. How about Alondra? awesome mare.
Well keep up the great work at Winning Colors and thanks for judging a great show here in Miami!

first let me say that my post wasnt really asking for the exact reasons I was just trying to point out to cutie how someone else may have taken her post and that just putting out statements like that is irresponsible.I do understand why Kelly felt the need to come on and explain though. Been involved and seen enough situations at other farms to know that rumor will be taken for fact. That is why I said IF I was a potential client and had read this I sure would have gone to the Mgr and talked to them about it..One case when I worked at a farm that owner was badmouthing my previous employer over the death of a very good mare. He was going on about how no one had checked the horses and they found the mare dead in the field etc etc. I so happened that I was the one who found the mare just a little off that morning and filled him in on everything that had been done and lets just say I set him straight on the real story. So you do usually feel the need to set the story straight.
embryo transfer has been around our area for at least the last 12 years, as I first saw it done at the STB farm I worked before coming to my current job..and no I sure dont think that anyone should expect 100% success rate with ET...I dont have the exact stats but from a book I was given last year (from a short breeding course) it says that there is only a 50% chance of getting a viable embryo with each flush and of those there is a pregnancy rate per embryo transferred of approx. 70% so it sounds like you guys were right there with the average.I think many people do not realize how lucky we are to get the foals we do.

Abejita, it was good that you explained that to Cutieblueeyes and told her she can't say stuff like that. Because I know that even though I try not to, sometimes I too say stuff that I can't really prove or have a back up for. But we all learn from our mistakes. ;-)

Ah, Lori, shouldn't this be moved to the health and farrier forum or something?

Hmmmm, seems to me this thread is bemoaning the general bad luck felt by far more horse breeders this past year than seems to be normal, NOT slamming anyone's farm in particular.
I had talked with my vet about this earlier this summer, and a few friends i met. Vet said indeed they were seeing more foal loss, more dystocia, more aborts, and more dummies. One friend had her first red-bag in 30 years of breeding. It certainly hasn't been just pasos, and it sure hasn't been management issues, just a bad year.

Kelly I dont know you or your farm..but it sure sounds like with doing embrio transferrs you had a great percentage...ANYTIME you get into more high tech stuff and higher numbers of foals you are going to loose some...
I had two foals 2 yrs ago..both fine...both coming 2 yr olds
I had 1 foal this year..I was there and everything was normal till he would not nurse..he was a dummy foal I lost him at 2 days..I bred 2 mares this year..one safe in foal one sonoed at 17 days then slipped (got heat stroke though so the high temp caused her to obsorb)
I bought 3 orphans this year...I now have 2...
Anyway I still say when you are manipulating nature and we are new to this your numbers will be high...30 some foals and only loosing 2 after born is great....keep it up..

Kelley,
I am sorry for my daughter's post, she is twelve. She meant no harm in it. I wish I would have caught it sooner, but it was in this area where I do not go. I did edit the post.
We will talk with her. I really do not like her posting on these boards. People take things the wrong way and like you said start rumors. These boards are the prime place for them to start.
Kids unfortunately don't get that. They just want to jump in and be part of the group and make posts without thinking.
I am sure telling her that her post upset you will drive your point home. She respects you and your farm VERY MUCH. We will talk with her.
I am sorry. If something like this happens again, which it hopefully won't, you have my number and my private email. Just let me know. One of my reasons for being on here and having access to my daughter's account is to try and catch things. Sometimes though, I can't catch everything, for that I apologize.
I just wish kids would stay on kid topics in kids forums.

Why would anyone expect better conception rates with embryo transfers?
The average conception rate for horses is 65%, way below other livestock. ET isn't done to increase conception, it's done to get more foals out of one mare for the breeding year. There is no attempt to increase fertility nor increase conception. As a matter of record, I've found no studies with equines that even suggest that is why ET is performed for horses.
Unlike cattle where the bull is tested for fertility FIRST with other attributes before he is considered a semen donor AND the cows are also checked for conception abilities. Not horses. Conception rates using AI and ET with other livestock species is on the upswing because they chose the most fertile and the most reproductive individuals. Horses? nada.
