Most of you know I have 2 goats. Sandy and Mandy. They are a year old now. Sandy had a swollen knee. Limping and could hardly walk. I had the vet out and he suggested it was a bad bump or cae. Cae is a tissue diease and she will eventually die. It could be fast or it could be slow. Goats can not have bute. So I have her on banimine. But they can only be on this for 6 days. Has anyone had experience with herbal pain killers? If so what did you use? I have her on msm. I feel so sorry for her. She will hold her foot up and talk softly to me. Telling me she hurts. It has been over 2 weeks and we have ruled out a bump. So it must be cae. And she keeps getting worse. I will just make her as comfortable as i can.

I am not sure that MSM does anything for tissue injuries, it is supposed to work on joints. It is also very hard on the stomach, so I'd watch for symptoms of stomach pain.

Can goats take asprin? I've used this buffered asprin on horses with success. You will need to adjust the dossage for a goat, but it is flavored and buffered.

Check on B-L Pellets or liquid. I don't know if goats can have it either, but it is herbal and has no bute. I have 2 of my horses on it and it really helps.

What is and what causes CAE?

Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis (CAE) is a virus that affects goats in multiple ways. Most often characterized by big knees, the virus also does irreparable damage to the lungs as well and affects the immune system leaving the goat defenseless against most common ailments. CAE is the bane of many goat producers and much emphasis is placed on raising "CAE free" goats.
