I'm trying out a new training blog where I post videos of horses in the process of training so others can see how they progress. New videos will be posted. Please let me know any comments you may have.

I could not get the videos to play either. Great idea though!
is the Petrolero son a grey? The first horse you mention?

I waited for the video to upload (took a few minutes) and then watched it. It worked great. Yes Terry, the horse is grey.

Of course I really appreciated the part where you picked up and carried the barrel with him. Nice to see a horse being desensitized along with everything else.

Jamie, what might work better for using it as a training blog is to put the music in the background and YOU TALK in the video. Describe what you are doing, how and why.

I know I'd become a regular!!! Can always learn more!!!

CarolU.. I clicked on the black box to that video...(there was no photo in there like there is of Exito below it)... A blue circle w/arrow comes up...like it is "going to" load... but it does not load... it just stays there with the pre-load.
Am I doing something wrong? Is it related to that Jamie uses a MAC and I have a Dell? I have DSL....

It's loading fine for me, but this is at my work PC--at home, forget it.

I have a LAN connection and a very powerful PC at work. Makes a difference.

Worked for me too! And excellent idea! I'll look forward to updates...let us know if you can?

If you're having video problems, keep in mind that it may take a little bit to load, if your connection is slow. If not, then you may need to download the latest quicktime for windows, you can find that at www.apple.com/quicktime. Everyone knows the Windows media player stinks anyway ;-) . I'll be updating the blog fairly often and you can subscribe to the blog which should alert you to changes.

Terry, I have a PC too. You probably should update your Quicktime. But you click on the black box and a movie screen will open. It will be black, but you'll see the bar at the bottom S-L-O-W-L-Y move to the right as it uploads the video. It will take several minutes, so go do something else. Once it is all the way to the right, click on the play arrow (at the bottom on the left) and it will play.

That is really cool. Nice idea of doing blogs during training process. I will be checking back regularly too!

Now I have a question about the butt collector. It seems a little different than others I've seen, it looked higher and the tail looked like it was tied to it. I've never used a butt collector and don't really understand how they work. Do you place them differently to make them work differently (higher or lower). I've seen some tails tied, some not. Some tied in the center, some tied off to the side (to the saddle).

Laura,

It's really not a butt collector, it functions as a "tail quieter". It really just lays on the hind end and helps remind the horse to keep it's tail quiet under work. Of course the best way to quiet a tail is to have the horse comfortable and secure in it's work, but on that particular horse, he had been spurred and had become very sensitive in his sides so that he would constantly swish his tail. The tail is only tied there so the quieter doesn't slouch off to one side or the other, I happen to use an old piece of IV tubing and tie it loosely as to not restrict the movement. I prefer this type of quieter (called a "canastilla", or basket type) over the one's commonly seen that are normally tied very tight.

Thanks for the explanation. That all makes sense now!!

You're welcome Laura,

It's a common misconception, mainly I believe since the peruvian horses use a rear-end collection device. The one they use goes down much lower on the hocks while our tail quieters, at least the way I use them stay up higher and fit looser, so as to not interfere with the horse. Collection comes from your seat, not a training device.

As I said before, I will be updating this bog fairly frequently. It has been updated with a new horse video.

Why can't you see the videos? Do you have a broadband connection? If not, it may take a while for the video to load. If you're just getting a big "Q" on the screen you may need to download the most recent version of Quicktime, you can find that at www.apple.com/quicktime

Yes I have DSL, I do see the Q. I'll try downloading the updates

Let me know if that doesn't work, we'll try to figure out something else. Also, anyone who may have specific issues on training to address, mounting problems, gait problems, etc. and would like to see a video assisting that, please let me know.

I downloaded the updates and was able to watch the video's.

Jamie, what might work better for using it as a training blog is to put the music in the background and YOU TALK in the video. Describe what you are doing, how and why.

I would also like to know what you are doing and why. Any chance the next time you start one we could follow his/her progress?

I downloaded the updated and watched all the videos. I just went back to see the trail training and I can't get them to play. It starts out as a black box, when I click on that it turns to the Blue Q but nothing happens?

Any ideas???

Edited to ad: I can watch the older videos, but not the new trail training one.

The video worked fine today.

How long has Engreido been under saddle?

He's a beautiful animal!

Engreido is four years old right now, just coming five. He's been under saddle for 14 months or so, we started him late..too many clients. He is for sale. I think he'd make a nice trail horse.

I had a little trouble getting the first video (of the 1998 mare) to load, it finally did.

I like her, but then I like most horses.

I find it very interesting to notice the difference in each horses way of going.

I got most of mine a babies, so I got what I got.

You have done an awesome job putting that blog together. I am really enjoying it.

Thanks Paula, I'm glad you're enjoying the site. I hope to start to make videos that address specific training problems and post them. The blog format is a great way to ask questions and have them answered right on the site.
