Hi Lisa, She looks like she is going to pop soon!
Here is a pic of my mare's udder from last year. The pics was taken about 2 hrs before she started streaming milk, then 2 hours after that she had the foall!

I feel like the "Paso Popparozzi"
Good luck!! :D

Thanks Laura - I think from the pictures Marci has a bit of filling out to go....she is still pretty defined between the teats, not rounded out.
I kind of felt like a voyeur taking the pics...and both Marci's Mom and mine were watching!!!
Of course, hubby is out of town tonight, so unless I wake Tori up and take her with me in the middle of the night, no mid-night checks tonight!!!

When the foal changes position, you will know she is close. I would not go by udder development on a maiden.
If you look at her from the front or back and her belly is not poking out, the foal is assuming the launch position. Her belly will hang lower too.

My mare bred June 19th started dripping wax early this morn and has milk droplets tonight. I'll be doing mid-wife watch tonight until...
Good luck with Marci. She doesn't look quite ready, but could shape up fast...so keep an eye on her.

Yep! She is by herself, when I went to turn her out this morning, I could see she had been inside the stall lying down (shavings and hay on her and marks in the stall). I'll be able to get down to see her @7am since I have Tori, then Hubby is home in the afternoon so I'll be able to get down tehre more. I've already told him to expect me to be spending a LOT of time with her so he has to watch Tori!
Good luck with your mare Lynn!!!!! Are you hoping for filly or colt?

Filly... but I have a name picked out for each. It doesn't matter really as long as it is healthy. The mom Insignia is 18 and dad E is 26.... so I'd like a replacement filly for mom before she retires.

Good luck...my mini mare has looked like that for a good two weeks now...sigh...
Her belly's pointed to the ground...bag swollen and hot...nipples hard...tail slackening...and still no baby. I'm being brave and not checking her from midnight to six...but I may have to start getting up here soon. She is in the foaling pen now, right behind the house so we can keep an eye on her most all of the time.
I think next year though when my two Paso girls are near delivery, it will be time for a foal-cam. I'm gettin' too old to get up every two hours... ;-)

Lori, you need to officially begin "ninnie season" on APF!!!
I think there should be a ninnie forum for all the expecting mothers out there.

05-20-2007, 01:30 PM
Well, just got back from the barn......
Udder is bigger, and this morning Marci also has edema on her belly in front of her udder! There was something hanging from one teat, but I think it was mud/dirt.....she would not let me get close enough to really check it out - she is kind of mad at me right now because I fed her in the stall instead of outside where she could watch the other 2.
I've left her in the small paddock for the day - Michael has to go out of town about mid-day, so Tori and I will be here by ourselves......pretty much until Wednesday.....betcha she will pop between now and then!!!
Will take a camera with me around lunch to try to get some more pics.
Oh yeah - the SUN is out!!!!!!!!
Carol Nelson
05-20-2007, 02:11 PM
IF there was something hanging on her udder...I'd keep a close eye...it could possibly/probably have been wax/colostrum...you may be seeing a little one before the end of the day. ;-)

When Tana got the edema in front of her udder, the next afternoon she waxed, then the following night she foaled....(oh and if you are not allergic to sulfa drugs SMZ works wonders for sinus infections ..if you are like me and always have some in the barn..I had one while on vacation in KY once and the doc prescribed smz one tab 2X a day for I think it was 7 or 10 days I was feeling better in about 2 days Plus take what decongestant works best for you( I had a fever of 103 and was so dizzy I was throwing up..I have never had vertigo like that)

If the edema increases, I would seriously consider having a vet out to check her - especially if you have _any_ fescue in your pasture. I thought I was safe from fescue toxicity with Katie with virtually all the grass gone, nothing new growing, and round bales for the asking.... but she ended up on 2 weeks of the anti-fescue meds and I believe it saved both Katie and the baby.
I know people who swear that their bred mares do fine on fescue year round.... Personally, I can't imagine risking it.
Here are the symptoms for fescue toxicity from Cornell:
http://www.ansci.cornell.edu/plants/toxicagents/fesalk.html
"Fescue Toxicosis: Effects on Broodmares
Unlike other livestock, the signs of fescue toxicity in horses are almost exclusively related to poor reproduction. Mares that consume large amounts of endophyte-infested tall fescue can suffer from a number of reproducitve problems. These can include
prolonged gestation
abortion
premature separation of the chorion
dystocia
thickened placenta
retained placenta
aglactia (suppression of lactation, i.e. no milk)"
I believe Katie's prolonged gestation, thickened (but not red bag) placenta, and initial lack of milk are all directly related to the fescue she was able to eke out of the pasture - in spite of substantial good quality hay available. Next year - all of my mares will be dry-lotted for the last 3 months.
lisa l aka marci
05-22-2007, 12:33 AM
Well, the edema has not really increased - however the crease between the udder halves is gone........and, Marci's butt jiggles when she walks....and her vulva looks 'squishy' compared to the other 2.......
Another hint - she let me love on her today a LOT......when I was down there checking on her with Tori, she wanted to be in my pocket.......and also check out Tori......Tori thought my 'punching' (fist, slowly and lightly tapping her on the nose) was hysterical......and Marci kept coming back for more!
If she doesn't pop in the next 2 days, I'm going to give the vet a call......I have a feeling she will go tonight or tomorrow night.....will be taking a ride down to the barn when Michael gets home tonight - about 1030pm.

Well, was down at the barn just before 11pm, then again just after 5am.....no baby.....
HOWEVER - this morning there was the unmistakable sopt of moisture on one of the teats! This could not have been water/mud - it has dried up a lot where Marci is, and this looks 'clear'.
I'm off to work shortly (of course!) - going to have Mom keep an extra eye on Marci today - and I'll be home by 4pm.

Watch her with the foal since she doesn't let you touch her back there. She may accidentally kick at the foal if she's tender.

Michele is right...I constantly am messing with the mare's udder and teats and bumping my hand around their flanks and insides of their legs months before they deliver to simulate the actions of a foal looking for it's first meal. Not a bad idea to take a rope and dangle it around their hocks to get them used to feeling things back there as that foal may circle all around that mare before it finally finds where it's wanting to be.
Also before mine deliver I go up with a warm wet cloth and clean them out between and around the ninnies just to make sure they're nice and fresh when baby starts to nurse.
I realize that now is not the time to start this...but next time! Like Michele said...watch her closely.

No, all the symptoms point to anxious, sleepless owner toxicity!! Marci is holding out. She's waiting to see who pops first, her or Lisa. My advice to Lisa is BLINK!
Ya'll know it's an evil plot by all prego mares to wait out the owners...I'm sure the mare betting pool has some interesting odds against us. Like if they keep one leg cocked up all the time will that make owner go sleepless 2 hours longer or just force owner to pass out all together.

Graveyard shift wouldn't bother me - I spent 8 years working around the clock.....except I have to work today and teach tomorrow at 930am!
Marci is used to having things around her hind legs.......ropes, me, dogs......so I'm hoping that isn't a problem.....as for her udder, I think she will be ok- she is pissy more than anything regarding her udder - I have been able to touch it briefly, a couple weeks ago I was able to wash it with a cloth but I haven't tried lately..........

I have to admit it . . . my name is Vicki, and I'm a Marci-aholic.
No matter what else I'm supposed to be doing, I have to stop periodically to check Marci's status.
Tonight has to be the night! When Danesa reached the dripping stage, she foaled at 9pm that evening. :D

Let's see . . . Danesa foaled at 9pm pacific time, which is midnight eastern time . . . so my guess is midnight.
Come on, Marci! Pop out that filly!

Well, even more signs of dripping on her legs, and she is very restless still - shaking her head and walking around.....not sticking by me for any loving......
I've closed off part of her paddock area - there is an 'alleyway' between the barn and teh electric fence that I don't want her foaling in........
Now I'm going to get the sleeping bag and some warm clothes together, and Tori's pj's and clothes for tomorrow - then back off to Mom's!
I don't have satellite/wireless internet there, so I may be a little delayed posting when/if the time arrives! I will have my camera too at the ready!

I have been closely monitoring Marci's "ninnie" pictures since I have a QH mare fixing to foal. We guesstimated her foaling date to be end of May early JUne (we didn't breed her, she was already bred when we got custody of her, long story). Her "ninnies" are running about 2 days behind Marcie. Bad news is I have to leave in the morning for Florida for 3 days. My hubby is on mare duty til I get back. He told me tonight that he "don't know nuthin bout birthin no babies"

So the Emi aka Dad says:
Go Marci go

Now isn't that just like a man to offer words of encouragement to the Mom as he stands and scarfs oats & hay while she does all the work? And of course her Mom is the one pacing and worrying
Tha baby will come about 2 minutes AFTER you fall asleep, I assure you the mare will win this "foal without owner" battle

And although it is a BOY - he appears to be healthy, watched him poop, and was tucked into the milk bar when I came in a little before 2am.......Marci is being a VERY GOOD mommy so far.......

I must agree colts are just too much fun. Sandy always wants fillies and I always hope for colts. They do get into everything, though, good luck. He looks great.

Whoop, Whoop! Congratulations. The year of the colt. Listen, the colts are far more affectionate and trainable. You will LOVE him. Very happy to hear mare and foal are in good health - THAT is the main thing.
