I am having a devil of a time finding windows that aren't ridiculous in price. There is a lovely fellow at Armstrong and Dobbs here in Athens that is working on getting me a nice comparision sheet of windows that meet my requirements. I hope to see it on Monday.

Meanwhile, I tried calling a builder's supply in Winder that my contractor recommended since they can fabricate on site. I called and asked if they did wood windows and they would not answer my question - they just said, "we don't sell to the public" I explained that my contractor had told me to call them and see if they carried the type of windows in the approximate sizes that I need. If they did, he would order our windows from them. She asked me if I knew the sizes, I told her that I had an idea of proportions but am flexible since I am trying to stay away from custom windows. She asked me again if I had an account there. I told her no, I was calling on behalf of my contractor. She asked if he had an account there. I told her that I assumed so since he builds houses and used their windows in his own house. She asked me his name. I told her and then asked her if we could get back to the subject of windows because my contractor would not be ordering windows for my house from them unless they had what I need. She told me that she would get a list of standard sizes together and call me back. Yeah, right - I bet I will hear from her.

Why are they being such dunderheads?

typical! Can't get good help these days!!

I'd love to replace the windows on our burbs house and take the window in it and put them in our cabin but I'm horrified at the thought of trying to replace them because not only are they 40 feet above a concrete driveway but they are six foot high double hung 6 over 6 pane wooden windows about 3 feet wide and I have 6 of them to replace if I do so. So I'll be following your progress with great interest.

Hee hee. I told Kevin about the incident and we have decided to strike them from our list of potential suppliers. We will probably end up using Armstrong and Dobbs here in Athens since they have been super helpful. I am doing the same thing with my tile. I found similar tile cheaper, but I am really impressed with Zumpano's customer service. Some things are worth paying a few more cents a square foot.

The problem with the windows is that I am trying to get something similar in proportion to the original windows and I need the 4 over 4 lites.

The direct buy thing is interesting. I think we will be OK on getting our appliances. Kevin gets a good price from the electric and plumbing supply house that he has an account with.
