We will be having a fun day type horse show June 2. I need to come up with 6 games/fun events for all ages. We can not do speed events (barrels, poles) due to slippery grass footing.

I intend to break each class down to leadline, walk trot, and able to canter divisions. Age of rider doesn't matter, but there will be no crossover of divisions.

So far I know we will have

1) Egg & Spoon

2) Potato Race

I need suggestions for fairly simple classes that all ages can enjoy.

Bareback dollar drill.... each contestant sits on a dollar bill (or $5 for older folk) that has to be at least half showing thru out the drill.... distance marked off and each rider is timed... those who lose the money are eliminated... those who are successfull run the drill one more time.... best time for riders still carrying their money is calculated and the money lost is divided up between the first 3 winners... 45%, 35%, 20%....

same version can be done in one shot as a race and the winners with money under their butts divide the lost money same as above...

2) saddle up, mount up, back 10', dismount right side, remount right side, side pass over post, dismount and unsaddle...... all competition at the same time or individually with a timer....

3) Race horse game...... as many contestants as you want.... 6 markers on the field.... spread about 1 1/2 horse lengths apart... (these are your goal posts)..... horses on lead lines (or stick horses).... game is... write on pieces of paper numbers from 1 to however many contestants are entered... put in a bowl... have someone draw a number and that horse moves ahead one post..... put number back into bowl, shuffle and redraw a number.... Winner takes all...... this game can be made more interesting by asking contestant if they want to try for a bonus post if they can answer a question when their number is called.... If answered correctly they get to move 2 spaces or just the original one space if incorrect.

4) Can you tell your horse blindfolded..... Contestant is blindfolded. Lead to 3 horses, one at a time, allowed to touch and talk to horse and then identify which of the 3 horses was theirs.....

How about a team competition? Two riders each hold part of a dollar bill. Whoever completes the obstical course in the quickest time still holding the money wins. The obsticals should prevent it from going to fast.

Ribbon contest.......teams of 2 riders......can use crepe paper ribbon as it breaks fairly easily.....

Teams ride together at gait called by judge - if one rider drops the ribbon or if it breaks they are disqualified. Can call for walk, gait, back, one rider circle around the other etc.......

When teh field is narrowed, shorten the ribbon by half and continue.....so on until one team is left.

This can be a LOT of fun - I saw it at Dillsburg a few years ago......

We like to play SIMON SAYS on horseback. Lots of fun for any age rider and sometimes I have to work darn hard to get some of those kids out

Red light, green light - tailor to suit each level and set speed standards before you start. Beware of "too enthusiastic" halts on the rider's part, though.

Trail leaf game - can be played in ring or on trail. Give a safely carried object to the first person in line and have him or her carry it to a designated spot on the rail, and set it down. Next one in line picks it up and takes it to the next spot, and so on. Way more fun than it sounds when you vary the objects. Just make sure the horses don't spook when the objects fall.
