Last weekend I let my husband ride my mare Ladda due to a back injury. I rode Favio. In riding him I realized what a nice little critter he is, very green, but nice.
Today we met some friends at McIntosh and rode for several hours. Donald again rode Ladda, and I rode Favio.
Today I think he realized he is a Paso, and gaiting was what he was made for! That little bugger was awesome. He corto'd the majority of the ride. He even showed me a flash of what his largo will be like.
Favio is almost 8, and has been ridden less then 30 times, and that has been spread out over several years. Pretty sad, but I have always chosen Ladda as my horse to ride. He is really a nice little (12.2) fellow. Gentle, sensible, but with enough fire to be flashy.
Today he was challenged by a water crossing which he JUMPED over, a wooden bridge which he shrunk inward and crossed, and strange horses, bicycles, hikers and people fishing. The big TaDA came as we were riding in a wooded area and could hear a helicopter, close, very close. It took off over us and the force of the wind caused a dead (large) tree limb to fall about 20 feet from us. At that same time a rather large hiker in a LOUD orange suit came over the hill towards us. Ladda jumped in place and Favio did a 180 then stopped. I was impressed.
I think I'm in love..................

A few photos
We noticed a pretty mare tied to a trailer and her owner came over and asked if our horses were Paso's. His mare is a Coral grandaughter. Nicely trained, did a few nice little reining moves. The mans name is James Cooper. A retired Sergeant that is currently active in helping train tha Atlanta Mounted patrol. I have invited him to come here, hopefully he'll drop in and introduce himself.

The only photo of Favio are of him tied up, I was the only one to bring a camera. So here is my little black pony. Dang he's acute little bugger!

Next is Donald on Ladda. He sure is lucky I let him ride my horse ;-)

Next is the group we rode with on the banks of the Chattahoochee.
The chestnut (on far right) is Ladda, left to right is Magotia (spelled wrong) on Lady J, then Gwen on Delta (Lady J's daughter) then Preston on Traveller (Delta's son). They are cookie cutter Tennessee Walkers. And in the foreground are Favio's ears

Cindy,
She looks great. She appears to be fit. He rides her in a custom made saddle, and a funky bit. We didn't ride with him, but I did watch him ride her a little. I would guess he's into the Parelli type stuff, just fro what I saw.

Thanks Erin. I believe he is the sweetest horse I have ever had. And I have had horses for about 37 years. He loves to be loved on, petted etc. I can go in his stall, leave the door open and brush him and he never attempts to leave. He is very people oriented. He does like to rub his lips on me. I NEVER let a horse do that, except him. He just likes rubbing his lips on me. Stella said Favorito was like that too.
He is also very careful with where he places his hooves, he knows where each hoof will land. He's seems to be surefooted. I feel safe on him.

He's a midget. He is about 12.2. However he looks and feels bigger. Everyone asks "don't you mean 13.2?". Nope, he's a little bitty fellow.

Hey Paula,
I remember Chambelona.
My friend Gundi (she was part German) loved to come out to the barn and see my horses (at the time, I was taking Dressage lessons).
She bought Chambelona (she was either a yearly or a two year old) and kept her in her back yard. This was Gundi's first horse. Chambelona had a great temperament.
Chambelona was the first Paso I had ever seen. A couple of weeks later, we went to a horse show together, where someone allowed me to ride their horse. That's all it took for me. I was shopping for a Paso the following week.
She showed Chambelona in Bella Forma with Pat Figueroa. When they got to Nationals (APF Nationals in West Palm Beach), Chambelona wasn't feeling well (she had the runs) and Gundi didn't want to push her. I'm almost sure she pinned 4th or 5th.
Her sire, El Capricho was a very flashy, high stepping Bay Performance stallion, who did very well in the ring. He was a local favorite.
I don't know anything about her dam.
I always wondered what became of her.

As far as I know Carol Thomas still has her.
She is also the granddam of Nieve (my avatar).
Carol crossed Caruso de la Ate with Chambelona to produce La Cariz de Caruso. That mare when bred with Lakehart Arrakis produced my Nieve Dorada

At one time Carol lived in Miami. She is now in Harlem GA. She has a small breeding farm and fly's under the radar of most "big name" farms. She has impeccible bloodlines. She seems to produce good "using" horses that could cross over to the show arena.
Currently she is producing some nice pinto's. I bought both Nieve & Favio from her. *IF* I was looking to buy again I would call her. She produces nice horses, with good lines and of good quality, and she asks reasonable prices. Of course the majority are unproven in the show arena, but as I have said before I don't go for what is popular, I like the old tried & true lines

Gorgeous Paula!!! I'm betting at least 13 2. Chinook is very short but is 13 2. But they definitely feel like 17 hands in the saddle!!! I LOVE the short ones.
Cindy how is this Santa Cruz horse related to our three??? (Primavera, Corazon and Luna Creciente)?? They are all I think grandaughters of Coral de Vez (half Colombian, half PPR) or is it great grandaughter??? and I can see that PPR action in the hoof flip in the gait even though the PPR is pretty far back. It's really cool.

Well Paula, you sure made me do a lot of thinking last night.
I'd be very surprised if Chambelona is still alive. The events I described occurred over 30 years ago.
El Capricho was shown and owned by Pedro Gomez, who died a relatively young man, a few years ago.
Carol Thomas purchased my stallion Atila. However, she called me a week later to inform me that he was " way too much for her to handle". I said no problem, we cancelled the sale and brought him home. I ended up selling him for triple the amount Carol was going to pay, about six months later.
Carol and I became good friends and she showed me her little gelding Padrino (I think his name was El Padrino Sin Par). I liked him and encouraged her to put him into training.
I took Pat Figueroa (Triana - back then she unmarried) to Carol's place and once we left, Pat was a little upset that I was referring her this "little gelding" to train. I remember telling Pat, "I see potential". It's okay, people never listen to me. They still don't.
Okay, Pat took him and finished him. They started showing him and boy did they win (I don't remember, but I know it wasn't fino). It was one blue after another. He went all the way to Nationals and I think he was either Champion or Reserve.
Carol Thomas is one of the nicest people I've ever met. I would love to speak with her again. It's been over 20 years.
Paula, can you e-mail Carol's number to me, please? Thank you.

It's funny, but Carol Thomas, Sandy Mixin & I were all in & out of the same barn area, but we don't really remember each other.
I boarded at the same barn as Pat and Margeret Triana. As that time they were training the Shougers horses. I paid my board by cleaning stalls for them.
Do you remember Blue Ribbon Stables? Down in Homestead?
I can most likely get Carols email to you, I think I lost her number.

Paula, you don't cease to amaze me !!!
You lived down here?
I must know you.
Let's start from the top:
In the early 1970's, Pat had an Arab filly she kept at Arturo's place on SW 123 Ave and about 61 St. During that same time, I took Dressage lessons, together with Alex (Amador), Susan (Sierra) and Phyllis Gaudreau.
I didn't know Pat at the time, nor did I know what a Paso was. But, I remembered her Arab filly, Carima. She was in the first stall (hard to miss).
A few years later, Pat moved Carima to a place in Homestead, but I can't remember the name of the place. We wanted to go trail riding, so I rode Carima and Pat rode a Paso.
I bought Andromeda RS from Ray in 1976 or 1977. She was out of Amorsita LaCe (a fino mare) and I was there a lot. I later bought Atila from Rolando, when he purchased Coralito and had no desire to have 2 stallions. Both horses were moved to a place Pat suggested, on SW 134 Ave (Talbot Rd), just north of Quail Roost Dr.
Paula, what ever happened to Bunny Swan?
Carol's place was across town, near Golden Eagle Ranch, just north of Flagler Street and west of 122 Ave. The entire area was developed and the farms are gone.

The arab filly was Karina I think, and Margeret owned the dam. I have a photo of her somewhere. When they moved her it was to Blue Ribbon Stables. I boarded there on and off for years. I also spent a lot of time at Casa CaJE. Al took my pony and me under his wing when my dad died. He is the one that taught me how to ride, I think he got tired of seeing me fall off the pony.
At one time I boarded my horse on the Shouger property, I was close to their nieces age and they wanted her to have someone to ride with. I rememeber the name Andromeda, but not the horse.
Between Al Camoesas and Blue Ribbon Stables I was exposed to some of the great horses of this breed. Back then the APF had its shows in an all breed setting. So I was lucky enough to be exposed to Saddlebreds, Tennessee Walkers, HAckneys, Morgans, Andelusians, The Stock Horse Breeds (Apps, AQHA, Paints). The also had the A rated Jumper Circuit.
I was very lucky to get to see all these breeds.

You're right, it's spelled with a K, but it is Karima.
I mentioned her to Pat, during 2005 Nationals and she specifically told me her name was Karima.
So where was Blue Ribbon located?
Yeah, Al. Really nice guy. Al rode his black stallion, El Cruzero Negro CaJe, in his hunched back riding style.
Back then, Andy (Andromeda) made headlines.
Ray had her thrown in a stall with this big winter coat (in late July) and forgot about her.
Pat told me about her and I purchased her as yearling from Ray, six weeks before Nationals. She had just enough points to qualify.
Pat and I worked her on the lines. Then I spent hours working on her coat.
Pat didn't want me to show her, because "my steps were not long enough" :(
So, Bunny Swan took her in the ring.
At Nationals, Eleanor Stacholy, the announcer, pronounced Andy Champion.
Then we all heard "wait".
Ray Shouger pointed to his truck and said, "let me get you out of here".
I said no, if I didn't win it, I didn't win.
So I walked into the show secretaries booth and I heard one of the Judges say, "I asked the other Judge who did you pin first and he said the black filly and I replied so did I". Andy looked like a chestnut, starting to turn grey.
They had made a mistake, adding up the points and I walked into the ring and gave back the big silver platter. The crowd applauded, as I walked out with the smaller one.
At the awards banquet that evening, everybody was talking about Andy.
What a way to walk into a breed, huh?
By the way, I asked Eleanor Stacholy to come with me, when I went to se Atila. She talked me into buying him.
I gotta figure out how to use this scanner business, so I can show ya some pictures.

Blue ribbon was located on Farm Life Road.

Yep, that's where she came from.
I had a gig to do in that area last year and I found the place.
Remember that big barn with the in-door riding area? It's gone.
The ring is gone, so is the "track" around the property.
And the houses are no longer painted white.
Remember how you'd come in from the west side?
You can't, it's completely overgrown.
You can hardly see the house from 217 Ave anymore.
Back then, Pat told me the first time she went out there was at night.
She couldn't believe her eyes, when she saw these "things" coming out of the Everglades.
Do you remember the mosquitoes?
I had never seen mosquitoes with teeth before.
