Just got back from taking a client mare to the vet for an ultrasound...
Its day 15 since the last breeding... the vet is scanning the "tract"...first to the left horn of the uterus.... nuthin, nada....then to the right horn..and there it is ... the black "lima bean" vesicle! Yeppers... there is a tiny embryo....but WAIT....what is this other black, smaller item...next to the vesicle?
HOPEFULLY...it is a cyst...a nothing to worry about item..and NOT another embryo... HOPEFULLY...
Well, you breeders out there will know that mare will be back to the vet for another U/S in ten days... to recheck the "other item" and of course make sure all is well with the embryo...
My client will be out of town for a week then, so I volunteered to go and get the mare and take her to that appointment.
Now, the mare owner is happy AND apprehensive! Its her first horse and first foal..I sure want everything to go just right for her...you can bet I will be on the cell phone calling her right after the appointment...as I know she will worry about it the whole time she is gone...
My gut feeling....its a cyst or a "bump" of no consequence...it is somewhat irregular in shape....so I will hope for the best...and hope her dream comes to fruition next year, and she wil get her little JJ Sultan de Favorito / Magic Lady Mako foal.... !!
Its BOUND to be a bay....that is my prediction!
AHHHHhh..... horse breeding.... always an adventure!

We're still waiting for Ms. Canela to come in...sigh...

Carol..do you have your own US machine? I think some of us here need to pool together and get a used one to share!

No...we don't have US and find that we're really quite crippled when doing shipped semen. That's why the vet is handling Bunny and Canela. It's one thing to have the stallion and the mare right on your place...but it's another when you have to be certain just what stage of the game that follicle is at... :-?
I think some of us here need to pool together and get a used one to share!
Well, I want it on MY place then...YOU'RE too far to drive to use it.... ;-)

Haha! I MEANT some of us breeders here in Colorado! Lots of farms here have U/S machines... they are available on line "used" (but guaranteed)... some of the older style ones that don't print out the photos... which would be fine with me.
Yes..you are right...without a U/S machine..its a "guess" at best.... as to if you have follicles, and what size they are, and how the inside of that uterus looks... as to having cysts, etc....
For me... being nearly out of breeding...to buy one is not cost effective... but if some of us pooled together and got one, we could pass it around and use it. Lots of classes available on how to use it... I can tell you I have stared at that little screen since they first began to use them...
The charge for the US on the mare yesterday was $45.00... no sedation (in the stocks)...next time she will need sedation as she will not relax and pushed hard on the vet's arm, which has a tendancy to distort the screen somewhat...so he wants to sedate her... sedation is $38.00...so the next US is $83.00... that can sure add up fast if you are U/S'ing mares for AI's daily....to check follicles...
And HEY..thats just for the vetting! Not including the almost $4.00 a gallon fuel to drive them there! :D

Is it normal to use sedation or stocks?
I just hold Lady for the vet when he has palpated or ultrasounded her. She always stands perfectly still.

Yep..its normal....
I don't know any vets here that will palpate without a stock...or if no stock available.....without sedation. Its for safety sake... so the vet don't get kicked or "sat on"..

Over the years, I have had 4 different vets do work in "that area" on Lady. None of them have ever asked to sedate her (meaning that they did not think that she needed to be sedated). They never acted like it was a big deal (working on her without stocks or sedation). Interesting.
Even when she was being flushed daily for a week, she never complained or acted up. I had so hoped that Spirit would inherit her agreeable nature.

I think it depends on the mare. Vets here only give it if the client asks them too. I have yet to see a vet give sedation without the client asking for it.

Yep..PH you are right...it depends on how the mare is for sure...
When you haul to the vet though...I have yet to see one who did not take that mare right to the stock for the palpation.
Back in the day when palpations "ruled"... for determining PG... we used to line up mares at the crossties for the vets. The Arab farm I worked at didn't have a stock... but these days... every mare I ever took to a vet, got palpated or U/S's in the stock. Few needed sedation... but when you get a mare who is straining in the stock to turn around and see what it "going on" or a mare who is pushing hard to "remove the arm".. it can get pretty painful for a vet to take!

My vet sedates the minute she thinks she will need it. She is a tiny little thing with little arms and she doesn't need to be hurt. Of course, she does many mares in a day...she needs to be in and out quickly with no problems.
She had to sedate Bunny the first time to check her but for the breeding she didn't need any sedation...she knew what was going on by that time. When you have a good set of stocks, you may or may not need to sedate. Every horse is different. Some of mine have needed it...some haven't.
Gosh, no...my vet wouldn't think of not using her stocks...that's what they're there for...

OMG!! Paula ...where have you been "double D"??????
How's "things"???
You horse gone- to- horse power motorcycle mama!!!
I have been giving serious though to a new dirt bike and just stopping the "horse" thing.... the why am I even doing this anymore...now that its such a lose-lose proposition.... AND heading straight to the motorcycle shop...for something that don't eat while its "parked"...
I can see it now... a bike in every stall! ..Hey...wait a minute...at least five bikes will fit in a stall!
But then...not enough "butts" to justify so many bikes or horses!
Good to see ya here...missed ya lots.... :D

Terry,
Been busy.. working, building a house, etc. I do miss talking with you, Carol, Dana and Rusel. I dp lurk here from time to time, though. :)
The Double D's are great! Wish I'd have done it a long time ago. When I told my Father that I had implants, his response was, "Jesus Christ, when you're 60, your tits are gonna hang to your knees." I replied, "No, Dad.. when I'm 60, my boobs will be the only thing NOT hanging to my knees."
I miss you guys!
