View Full Version : Hello from the Midwest! New user from Southern IL
Hello all Paso People! New user from Southern IL here to learn more about this wonderful breed. ( I am also new to forums!)I have owned horses for over 30 years and have only owned PASOS (notice the s in there) for about 1 year.
I AM COMPLETELY HOOKED!!
I feel like I wasted my time with Hunter/Jumpers for all of those years and I am extremely excited to have this new undertaking with this breed of horse. If you have ever jumped fences to get that adrenaline rush, you won't EVER have to jump AGAIN...just buy a Paso Fino. You get that rush 24/7 and you don't even have to ride them!!! :D
:?: Where are the best places to find bloodline information?
I am looking for history on some of my horses. I want to find out what their parents have done, how many siblings they have ,photos, or any info to help me study Paso Fino lineage. Columbian and Puerto Rican
Thanks to this forum and anyone that can help

Hey Mary...welcome! pasoregistry.com has pedigrees on line, although they are not 100% accurate..it's always a good place to start....some photos with some of the horses there too. You can always do a search here, on a horse's name...sometimes you'll find info about them that way.
What lines do you have?

Welcome!
You can check
http://www.pasoregistry.com
for bloodline information and many of us here have also been involved with Pasos for a while and may be able to help you with any questions.
Tell us about your Pasos!
I'm not sure if I visited pasoregistry.com or if it was pasopedigree.com :-?
I will surely take a look there...Thanks for the info.
As for my horses bloodlines:
My 5 Year old stallion is by Pirata de Besilu out of a mare named
Morenita de Los Angeles. (His OLD reg. name was El Buchanero de Los Angeles, but I changed it to Pirata de LPF 37,777)
I call him Boo because he is "My Boo", my sweet child (cajun saying)
I also have a 5 year old mare 39,424 named Monarcha de LPF. She is by Monarca de Besilu out of a mare named Cancionera de Cancionero. I know this mare is a full sister to a horse that is owned by Manny Sanz, Jr : La Bayamesa de Mas. (my mare's old name was LM Antillana)
I call this mare Sis. She is a GREAT ride!!
I ALSO have another 5 year old grulla mare 40,091. She is by Oro de Piloto out of a mare named La Jibarita de Plebeyo. This mare we call Abby...sometimes we call her "crabby abby" because her ears can lay back on her head, even when she is having a GREAT time! How funny. I've never met a horse like her. This mare had never been TOUCHED until 6 months ago. What a project she has been! She coming along so fast that we sould be riding as soon as the weather here cooperates!!!
Any help in my quest for knowledge is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!

You sound just like me! I got hooked on Pasos just over 3 years ago and felt I wasted a lot of time on "trotters" now. But I'm glad to be w/the breed now. 8-) I also purchased a project paso, but he's coming along so nice now I couldn't be prouder.
I know Manny Sanz Jr personally, I 'll have to tell him you own his horses sister. La Bayamesa is a lovely fino mare who LOVES her owner. It's so cute to see her call to him when she sees Manny in the yard.
Your horses sound very nice and very well bred. If you need help posting pix of them, just let me know. ;-) hint, hint...we need to see some pix of them babies. :D

I'll take a gander at the pedigrees...but I'm quite familiar with Oro de Piloto. Took my first ride on a Paso at that farm! He is a fino stallion, beautiful palomino. Usually puts pretty good temperaments on his babies. Come to think of it, it was his offspring that made me fall in love with this breed. His sire and dam were both fino horses. If you have any questions about training her, his owners would likely be very helpful. They have crossed him on Chucuano lines numerous times, and likely Jibarito as well. I've got their email addy if you'd like it.
Pasopedigree has a great deal of info as well. You can search horse's names..and find a wealth of info. As with anything, most of the info on any of the forums are opinions based on personal experiences, so you can get a lot of different answers to the same question. They also have pedigrees on line...might be a bit more accurate, but no photos WITH the pedigrees. There are quite a few photos in the forums themselves.
I will gladly share the photos I have of my babies!! :D
Please instruct me where to go...for the picture downloads, that is.
You can see my stallion on http://www.equine.com/stallions/dshowhorse.asp?horseid=891352
:?: I am also looking for places to advertise my stallion. Do you have any suggestions?

WOW! what a beautiful grey stallion.
There are lots of places to advertise your stallion. Showtime Paso Fino magazine now comes w/a DVD which is nice for showing off your horses gait. ;-) We are currently working up some good deals w/them on internet advertising too. So when you advertise w/Showtime, you get banner space on this website as well.

Hi, Mary
I'm not too far from you. Across the river about an hour 15 minutes away. Do you trailride your horses or show or ?
We have 5 Pasos. You sure can't have just 1 :D
Welcome!
Welcome!
Bayamesa IS in fact, a great mare. Your horse must be the same as well. Shes one of the top contenders here in Miami. Manny and her make a great team.
Hope you enjoy your time on here!
My husband and I LOVE to trail ride! We are currently looking for Paso buddies to ride with. Our TWH and Fox Trotter friends can't keep up with our "Ferraris'" :grayhorse:
We have managed to influence a Fox Trotter friend to invest in a Paso so she can keep up with us on the trail. Her and I ride during the week A LOT when the weather cooperates. My husband only rides 1 or 2 times a month...the weekend warrior. We sometimes go to Greensfelder and quite often to a small place called Ramsey State Park (IL). I am ALWAYS up for a trail ride SOMEWHERE! I don't care if I have to drive 3 hours, I'm going!!! I have only owned my Pasos for 1 year and they were in training in GA for 6 months. Now they are home and I can't wait to trail ride them everywhere.
We will also show our horses this coming year. We showed our Monarca mare "Sis" last year at the Hattiesburg show (first time out) and she did very well. That was my first time in the show ring on a Paso Fino. I showed H/J for over 30 years...and I was EXTREMELY TENSE in the 4yr old A/O Pleasure Fillies. Showing Pasos is VERY different from H/J shows.
We will start showing the stallion at the IL Horse Fair in March @ the Stallion Parade.... I just have to show him off!!! ;-)

Mary, I just went in the ring for the first time in December. You are SO right, Paso shows are different from the rest. I used to show QH circuit  I was a nervous wreck too. That board is scary. I think we just both need more practice in the ring. :D

Mary, we only live about 15 minutes from Greensfelder. I work during the week, but if you are going to be over this way on the weekend and want a riding buddy, give me a yell. It's a great place to ride.

Hey Mary! I agree, Pasos are a LOT more fun than H/J. I'm Lana, and I have a PPR (Pure Puerto Rican) Paso Fino gelding named Pitter-Pan. I'd love to see photos of your horses!
When I got Pitty, I knew nothing about bloodlines either. But on pasoregistry.com I was able to look up information on his parents and grandparents. That's when I discovered he was PPR! You can also post bloodlines here on the forum, and there are a lot of bloodline experts on here that can give their valuable opinions. I also went to the pprpffa (http://www.puertoricanpasofino.org and read articles on PPR breeding. My horse has some very old lines. Someone on this forum actually say his lines and PM'd me to say they'd bred to his grandsire in PR and had a relative of one of his father's great-grandsires. It was very cool to find out! So, ask a lot of questions and you'll find some answers.
Welcome aboard! :D
I think you are right, Lori. Ring time will probably cure it...it took 30 years to get comfortable in the H/J....that means by the time I am 65 I should be able to breathe while I am showing in the arena!?!
Thanks for the help...working on getting some pix up for all to see :bsmile
Jan-
Looking forward to riding with you VERY soon. Lets pray that our Spring is early and we can get out on the trail and ride together.
We go on a nice ride in April to Land Between the Lakes in KY. Have you been there? Would you like to go with us? It is a great place to have a weekend ride with nice camping/cabin/hook-up/shower facilities and it is usually 10 degrees warmer there that time of year than here in STL.

That sounds great, Mary. Just let me know when you are coming this way.
I haven't been to the Land Between the Lakes, but did stay at another place in Cadiz Kentucky a couple of years ago that was a lot of fun.
Let me see what I have going in April. What weekend are you going?

Welcome! I just love your stallion, Gray w/dark mane is just gorgeous!
I hope you find all sorts of wonderful info..
I own 2 pasofino geldings. Chico is 6yrs old bay and Storm is 3yr old Dun. Storm is a work in progress..lol Gotta love those paso's!
8-)
You may have been at the same place I am talking about???
It is near Cadiz.
We should be going Apr. 21,22,23 We go there every year. It will be great to take my Pasos along this time. In years past, we have had to take our "slow horses" (we also have a Paint horse, an Arab/Saddlebred, a Spotted Saddle Horse, and a Morgan/draft/QH cross...TO MANY HORSES THAT AREN'T PASOS  ) so we wouldn't leave our buddies behind.
Hello Pasofan! :hello
Thanks for the nice compliment about Boo. He is definitely a work in progress just as your Storm is. He is a very cute guy also. What type of lines does he have? I am so interested in ALL bloodlines and their attributes. I am finding that this breed, more than any others I have studied, has certain lines with very distinct attributes.
Hello halfmoonfino/ Lana :hello
Glad to meet you! Your guy is cute!
Do you show? Trail ride? Parades?
Thanks for the info for the PPRs I really need to learn to distinguish the difference between Columbian and Puerto Rican bloodlines. :duh

Welcome Mary!! I'm from the midwest too (western SD). Your stallion is a beautiful boy!! Love the dark/light contrast.
Here's me and Ultralisto de Dakota (Listo). He's a 10/yo gelding (just started at 9! - so he's still kind of young)

Mary, Welcome to the breed. You are always welcome to visit our farm and to trail ride with us too. I just met your farrier, Ida, who came to our farm this past week to do a natural trim on one of our horses. Really liked her. The Illinois Horse Fair is always a great time to meet most of the Paso Fino owners in Illinois and Missouri. I'll be there and will look you up. Michele Branson

ITS' ABOUT TIME YOU SHOWED UP GIRL!!!!!!!!
Thought you would never get here. Glad to see ya here. For those of you that don't know this is the girl who had a very sore and frightful boy at the Gainsville show last spring. If I would have been greedy Mary had offered to give Boo away to anyone that wanted to take the SOB. If my memory serves me correct 30 minutes later She had Vicky in his stall showing her why he was so ill toward being ridden. And I have to say I would have never recognized him by those gourgeous Photos. He looks a whole lot happier about life Mary. Kudoz to you. And it will be nice having you to chat with.

ITS' ABOUT TIME YOU SHOWED UP GIRL!!!!!!!!
I know! Turns out I met her at Nationals this year. She WAS sporting a nice APF.com tank top tho. ;-)
Thanks Boyd for the fill in info!!
Now, for the rest of the story...Yes it is true I was very unsure about my stallion. After getting some background (how true it is, I'm not sure :?: )
I had "heard" that this horse was a "killer"??? The trainer said he was just SPOILED??? You had to rope him from the top of a stall to catch him???...whatever...
I FOUND out that this horse was started roughly not having many pleasant moments with humans. He was also in tremendous PAIN!
Some of it was basic training soreness, most of it was from
OVER TRAINING AND NO MAINTAINING (before I got him) mentally and physically!!! I was very unaware of some of the training practices some people use...I THOUGHT I had heard and seen it all in 30 years of horses! NOPE. I have seen some new things this past year. That is why he is home learning that humans can be good. :D
He came home after Gainesville and has been improving ever since!
I have been a Parelli Level 3 for a couple of years, just playing around, so I decided working on Natural Horsemanship techniques with him and he is responding exceptionally well...once he figured out I wasn't going to eat him. I was told by someone previously that if I used those methods with this breed that I would ruin my horses. From my recent experiences, I DO NOT THINK THAT IS TRUE!!
Thanks for all the advice Boyd
Especially THANK YOU for introducing me to Vicky! She is GREAT!!!
I have "rescued" and rehabilitated horses for the last 10 years. She has improved my rate of recovery for these poor horses in a drastic way. She has also broadened my ESMT skills. You probably didn't know that I was a ESMT? Makes your story about Gainesville even better. I've practiced for 5 years and thought I could read most horses' pain. Vicky showed me how to "read " these animals. I was so caught up in learning about the breed I forgot about the horse. :duh What a reality check.
I am so glad that things are on track now.
Hello Michelle! :hello
I have had so many people ask me if I know you!! I keep telling them "not yet." Can't wait to meet up with you at IL Horse Fair. I've heard some very nice things about you and your horses
Was Nate Horseman your trainer for a while?
Debbie S
Your guy is really cool!! 8-) Glad to know you have a late starter, too. I will just be starting a 5 year old mare. Only been touched by humans for 6 months.
Great to meet another Midwesterner :D
I would LOVE to ride the Black Hills! I heard it was fabulous. I have never been to SD. Let me know when you plan on going, I'll be there. :yay
Hi laecl :hello
Good to meet you. Can't wait to read all of the crazy stuff from all the people. I know I will have to get the camera out more. Those mud photos are histerical. BUT If it is a contest people want...mine gets sticks, leaves, shavings and sh** wrapped in his mane AND covered in solid concrete!!
Now I just have to figure out how to get photos on this site!! I'm doing something very wrong... :confused

I had met several ESMTs and never was wowed. But then I was referered to Vicky and she knocked me to the floor. She showed me how everything works and is combined together. And how importent saddle fit is. She just helped me with 2 more horses. One is allready off to his new home and today was the first time Noche tested without any pain. After dinner he actually came to me to get a good scratching and nearly turned upside down and inside out to get all those itchy spots. I was going to take advantage of this beautiful afternoon and work him a little but I thought this was a first for him let him enjoy it.
Yeah, I wasn't wowed when I went to school either... I only went because I thought I would learn more and I did to a point. I am a certified human massage Therapist also...that doesn't mean much either.
You must have a talent for these things
I have to say that Vicky has a definite talent that is not replicable. It is engrained in her. We Thank God for her and Our horses Thank God for her.
Glad to hear your horses are coming through their situations. Vicky filled me in on them. You can't hide Boyd...I'll find out about ya. ;-)
All you guys have got me ready to fire up the camera! These forum photos from everyone are great!!! I should've gotten here sooner!

Welcome Mary. I have Erin's Manito (your Abbey's brother) in my barn and he does take ear pinning to a new art form. But he really isn't as nasty as he would like us all to think. We call him little Napoleon, cause he does have "short mans syndrome"
I have two Pasos of my own Dinamico De Diamante (Mico) a 10 year old bay gelding and Pricision Del Solitario (Rio) a 5 year old black gelding. These are them;
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y134/micomyhorse/rioandchrisatbobbies.jpg
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y134/micomyhorse/christmas2.jpg
as you can see I like letting my kids play with the horses.
I too grew up in the midwest, Cincinnati to be exact.
So welcome to the board.
Hi Teri :hello
Great to meet you!! That is so awesome that your kids get to play with your horses all the time. It gives me hope that Abbey will make a good horse for my husband to ride. IT IS AMAZING how Abby and Napoleon are so similar. Do you know if these horses are full siblings?
I love seeing your photos.
I'm still learning the process here on the forum...should have some more up by the weekend.
It took me all day to do the 1 photo of my stallion, Boo.
Look forward to talking with you more :D

Welcome Mary. My Paso gelding hails from Illinois... Broadview Farm owned by Sara Nelson, to be exact. It's funny, I searched for 5 years for the perfect Paso and ended up getting one from IL instead of Florida or the Carolinas, places known for having lots of them. Turns out IL is the hot spot for Pasos.
