I was at the Dillsburg Pa. show this weekend...One of the ladies that has a pure Puerto Rican paso was there...I mentioned I had one, and two of his ancestors were Maria Luisa and Corel LaCE....she insisted that Corel LaCE was Columbian....Who's crazy???me or her?????
P.S. My geldings' ancestor (just looked it up) is Sombre LaCE, not Corel LaCE.....

Sorry Mac...but Coral is Colombian. Don't feel bad, you'd be surprised at how many people think he is Puerto Rican. Sombre LaCe is Puerto Rican. :D

What's funny is the people who really plug for Coral (Colombian) have mostly PR stock- and try to tout PR the most! :D

That IS puzzling, I must agree.

I think Barb Preiss is "to blame" for the misconception that Coral was PR - she crossed him so successfully with some PR mares, I guess the PR rubbed off on him, lol.

Nah, it isn't Barb's Fault- Although it IS her fault Zumi's around, LOL. That might count for something there!

Yes, Coral LaCE and Cantante de Omega changed my mind about being 100% pure Puerto Rican horses only. We had Cantante because he was so exceptional as well as his Puerto Rican dam. He was so gaited at anytime and place. He was big and gentle with heart that would die before he would quit. He did have some of the best of the Colombiano Paso lines in Colombia, tho. Gaucho, the great grand sire, the Desvelo, the grand sire, and Singer that was reserve Grand to Coral LaCE in performance as his sire. I have his last three offspring. (Mares were bred when he was 27 years old.)
Then Coral LaCE offspring would draw my eye at every show with owners and children on them. They were to me something I would want for any horse. They were owner loved, gaited, head sets born, a style of carriage. Yes, I did buy him, breed him to my pure Puerto Rican mares. I never lost their quality, but added to carriage and athleticism.
Sombre LaCE was pure Puerto Rican. I owned a full brother to him and a full sister. They were typical of the pure Puerto Rican breed. They were gentle, people loving, gaited at all times, golden palominos, and I am line breeding on these lines now. Sombre LaCE daughters have proved many stallions and have become top ten dams. Who was Sortibra (or Sortibras? Or is that even spelled right?) LaCE?

Another case where one (wo)man's trash is another's treasure. A horse that is not "fino enough" proves to have the characteristics that the general public want in the paso fino - gait, intelligence, tractability, gentleness, true brio, beauty and good conformation. Thank goodness he wasn't gelded!!!

10-03-2005, 11:06 AM
Okay Miss Barb...since we're picking your brain...what qualities did you see in Plebeyo, that inspired you to step outside of your normal realm (PPR) to breed to him? :D
I think it is the LaCE name that confuses people about Coral being PPR. I'm not sure why, as they had as many or MORE Colombian horses. Okay Faeton was PR, and a foundation sire, but a lot of the LaCE horses were Colombian. Most times when there is confusion, that is what I hear, that they thought that the LaCE horses were PR...and that they bred them, which isn't necessarily the case either. :-?

Kerry,
I am glad you asked that question. You will see I bought Cantante in 1977 or 1978. Then I had to get out of the lines to get back in to my lines and bought Coral LaCE in 1981.
I always look for a paso that has excellent head carriage, natural gait under a child or owner with good conformation, beautiful heads, and a good disposition as well as good feet. Plebeyo was awesome when I saw him win the Res. Grand National Championship in 1983. Even tho I stay completely away from gray horses , I saw he fit my criteria even tho he had the grey factor. I watched his offspring and the offspring of them such as Idolo, Luneraje, Plebeyo Dos , Magico , Succesor, and decided to go for it with 6 of my mares. I still have two awesome stallions by Plebeyo. Chucuano is sensitive on the ground but will ride his rider through fire if asked. Plebeyo is like a pet, crosses beautifully on the Coral LaCE daughters. His daughter by a Marichal daughter won the Grand National championship. Plebeyo de Otra's dam was a daughter of the twice grand in fino , Frio Viento (full Puerto Rican) and she defeated the multi grand in fino in the Fl State Championship with the same three judges as nationals. Her dam claimed some Gaucho /Desvelo /Singer lines from Colombia as well.
Both are awesome in gait, beauty, conformation, but do take 4 inches from my size, sometimes produce grey, and at times, Chucuano priduces a little too much brio for my taste.
Trudy Weichers has four of Plebeyo de Otra's daughters out of Coral daughters and she has one of Chucuano's out of a Coral LaCE daughter.
I know she likes them very well. I still have 41 pasos and will keep my 4 Coral Sons, my 2 PR stallions and my two Plebeyo stallions. I have two outstanding Cantante stallions that I will keep. Plans are to go down in my breeding with my age. I will keep a few mares. One is line bred on Maria Luisa and is cremello and perfection. Her name is Maria Luisa de Vez. (I don't think I am bragging here). Maria Luisa her great granddam on sire and dam was to me one of the best paso finos I ever rode. Barb Preiss

Thanks Barb! Hope you don't mind me asking these questions. I would email, but like it or not, your herd is "historical". I thought others might wish to know, as well. I had often wondered what type of horse would make you consider crossing the PR with Colombian lines, as I knew you had a LOT of Puerto Rican horses.
One more question...Lula FN. Did you own or lease her, and what can you tell me about her. I see her in quite a few pedigrees, and have often wondered what she had to offer her progeny. I guess that is more than one question.
I forgot to mention my admiration for Cantante...really like that guy! I think Singer was from some of the best lines available at the time, in Colombia...and the PR lines speak for themselves. :D

Here's the photo of my Singer daughter, Danzarina mi Lu, at a Perry GA show in the late 1980's. She is 20 years old now. She is just as you described Cantante, Barb. Big, and impeccably gaited, and would give you her heart if you asked for it.
It just sickens me that she cannot sustain a pregnancy. I still have a dream of doing an embryo transfer...depends on how my finances hold out.

I had one of Coral's full Colombian offspring, Relampaguito de Coral, an extremely well-gaited stallion. Ray had a full sister and brother. My late 15.2H horse was included in Issac Wyler's largo video. Farm visitors loved him and his offspring! I wouldn't part with them!
Our region has gone caroling. One year, before Ray had greyed, we stopped at Dee's farm. There was a picture of a young Plebeyo in the office. It was amazing how much Ray and Plebeyo looked alike!
People had the idea, that he had Puerto Rican lines due to the LaCE background. I've had to explain about that LaCE suffix. Once someone had to back me up once on those facts. One person was so positive all LaCe paso finos were PR.
I must thank Miss Barb for sending a regular version of the following, which I used as an avatar, to The Western Horseman. She sent a picture, that I had given her. It thrilled me to have it included with an article on paso finos.

Paso Fantasy, ' what I loved about your Coral LaCE stallion was his absolute gentleness, natural gait and the fact that his full sister and brother were the so gentle and safe with Florence Shulten's "Special Children" as well. The special children were mentally handicapped but not lacking in care or love at Florence's place. She was in her 80's before retiring the pasos and the care of the special ones. I don't know whether you remember but your husband got on Ray's full brother Esplendor de Coral at a clinic and ponied your stallion from his back. Both were so gentle. It always pleased me to see the Relumpaqito's like offspring at the little clinics as well. You and your husband sure helped in a special way for Florence.
I don't know whether you knew or not but we kept Misty bred because it seemed to put her Melanomas in remission. However, the vet said Misty did not carry on Relumpaquito and was going to euthanize her. Your stallion was born the evening before putting her to sleep. He had to be special.
I was asked several months ago about Coral crosses with full Colombian mares. There were around 15 , I blieve with a quick run of my memory.

Lula FN was a little black PR mare of Betty Klein's. She was a daughter of Sonador. The fact that she was a FN horse would mean she was pretty good to me. She produced Coralito when bred to Coral LaCE. He was a Lifetime Champion. He continued to win many points. He was absolutlely stunning in beauty. I never bought Lula FN as she had three very beautiful and oustanding offspring that became champions as well when bred to Coral LaCE. This is my breeder's preference but even tho each was exceptional, the three did not look alike or resemble each other. The Puerto Rican mares that I chose from Betty's herd was the Kofresi daughter, Raxa, (full sister to Sandy's beloved Antares) , La Luz del Sol BR and Nevada Princesa Mako.
Raxa bred to Coral produced Trudy Weicher's Kristina, Raxa de Vez, and Arriba. If she would be so kind as to put the three's pics on this site , you would see the likeness. Nevada's offsrping are so numerous but the ones shown before their kind was put out of the showring were Coral's Monarca de Vez and Willow Wind Mako. La Luz was top ten dam 6 times by her like offspring. Willow Wind Mako was trained by a twelve y/o and won so many titles too numerous to mention . Three of the championships were in versatility three years in a row. To me this is one of the most difficult claases to show along with trail and the little girl and Willow won Res. in trail. Carlo del Campo was an oustanding horse and won a Res or third in the Grand. He was shown beautifully by Mike Rocker. Dee Torcise was going to buy him and Mike Rocker loved him so much he would not sell him. Alot of people liked him as one of the finest Coral LaCE stallions. Rizado por Cima was shown nicely by Bill Davis. I believe his nickname was "Bean" and called that lovingly by the Davis's.

Carlos was, in my opinon, the best Coral son. He was an extraordinary horse. As good as any of that time. Rizado was called "bean" though I don't remember why. He was broke and trained by.....me.

Cindy, I have almost everyone that has a Coral son tell me that they think theirs is the best. I love to hear that they think they may even be better than mine. Smile.
I remember Hacho Ami, Pacho Ami, Monsignor Mako, Esplendor de Coral, Relumpaquito de Coral, and the two you mentioned as Rizado and Carlo del Campo.
I just looked up and saw that Lula FN's three offsrping by Coral were Golden Princess Mako, Coralito and Sorprendido. I saw Golden Princess Mako delivered to the Small family in Indiana show when my daughter judged the show. She rode all the children in their classes and the parents in some as well. She was golden palomino. Coralito was almost a black bay and Sorpendido was a plain bay that was as steady as a rock in his gait and classes.
For anyone that does not know what FN stands for , it was Frank Noyas. He always claimed he was not a horseman but rode Coral LaCE all over the neighborhood. He also was smart enough to buy him and recognize the Champion that he was and he became the 1972 Grand National Champion. It might be noted that a saddle bred man rode Coral and CECE Figueroa was on Singer to win Reserve. I don't know whether Coral LaCE ever got transferred out of George LaHood's name but Mr. Noyas indicated to me he bought Coral LaCE at CECE's place. Barb Preiss

That may be, Barb, but Carlo was not mine nor did I have any connection to him other than one of admiration. Mike Rocker owned and did all the training on him. Sorprendido was a very good horse as well but not as good as Carlo. Willow Wind was also a very cool horse. Still, not Carlo.

:D don't know what criteria is all involved but I do know we have offspring by our two favorite Coral sons and beauty and responsiveness are equalled only by disposition uncompared to any horse of any breed. range of gait and versitilty were also passed on as the stamp of excellance.Of course we have Cantante as maternal grandsire on my favorite horse ;-) and Coral as paternal grandsire! 8-)

Having a direct Coral son is a joy we never expected to experience, but Eminente aka 'Emi' has proven to be everything we expected and more! Now his young son is growing by leaps, bounds, and largo strides here! He says he _will_ be a force to be reckoned with! ;-)
Now if I can just get his video posted.... we can make his granddaddy proud!

Cindy, I should have just said their owners loved them the best. They only have to be the best in their owners eyes. That is really what counts to me. Coral came up with tenth place in the stallions survey according to the PFHA stud book study done by Mario Gomez Caballero with the most Stallion sons with over fifteen offspring. Their were only 25 stallions in the USA that qualified. Evidently, their owners weren't the only ones in love with their sons of Coral. Carlo himself was a true son of Coral. Do you know how Esposa Que Tal produced with any other stallions? In your opinion, how did she produce? How did Carlo produce? Barb Preiss

Arriba-17, Angel-15, Desiree-15, Fantasia-19, Kristina-16, Marisa-18,
Pasion-17, Raxa-20, Silueta-16, Valentina-17. To ride any of them, you wouldn't think they were a day over 10. Very spirited and great to ride. We love them with their individual personalities. We are keeping fillies from each of them to be sure to carry on this line. It is just so hard to let any of them go!! We just sold a son from Raxa. He is such a great guy and has only had a saddle on him five times. He will be going to Phoenix but sounds like a tremendous home he is going to so that makes me happy. I had thoughts of if he didn't sell to this guy I would just keep him but I can't keep all 60+ so if good homes are found it makes me happy for them. http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b47/sundancerpasofinos/Ciscobb_5837.jpg

P.S. My geldings' ancestor (just looked it up) is Sombre LaCE, not Corel LaCE..
Very common error to confuse the bloodlines of the LaCE horses... LaCE was a farm name - it did not indicate specific bloodlines. Coral LaCE was pure Colombian, but many of the LaCE Pasos were PPR.
Coral crossed on PPR mares was an incredible nick and produced excellent breeding stock because of the consistency of his offspring. Sometimes overlooked are the Coral daughters, although Trudy has an incredible collection she will show you in a heartbeat! More than one stallion has benefited based on offspring out of Coral daughters! Both daughters and sons of Coral carry a unique, but identifiable blend of his unique characteristics while carrying on the PR blooodlines of the original PPR dams.
No wonder Coral LaCE is so often connected with the PR bloodlines....it was a special 'nick' that was consistent and reliable in gait, disposition, and ability.

Your horse is beautiful and as I said before, I have always thought Al was one of the most beautiful Coral sons. They are all beautiful but his coloring is gorgeous. And he is a sweet horse too. Trudy

I love the Coral daughters photos so much that I had to turn the one of the ten mares into my screen saver! They are such beautiful girls and, lucky me, I'm greeted by their faces every time I sit down at the 'puter.

I love the Coral daughters photos so much
LOL - if I didn't have Emi as my desktop pic, I would certainly have to consider his sisters as one of the next logical choices!

I also thought Coral LaCe was PPR its nice that Barb came on to give us some information. No doubt about it but all the Coral decents i've seen are great horses sometime you think they are not paso's cause of how nice they can be.
thanks again Barb!
What results have you gotten through the linebreeding?

Andrea, thank you so much!!! What a nice compliment.. Now that we have four more here I am wondering if there is a possibility of getting them all together. But probably not a bright idea! Originally when we took the picture of the "Big Ten" I wanted to have Enchanted Tomas, our Coral stallion standing off to the side. Didn't take long to decide that that wasn't a good idea! We had babies throwing fits and moms mad about their babies wanting to be by them. They just don't understand that if they would hold still for those minutes I need it would be over! But it was fun. Now that it is snowing, AGAIN, it will be a few months before I even think about it.
And Sandy, that is a gorgeous picture!!! I love it!

Trudy you and Leonord and Michelle have enough to make a calander and if you are shy put some historic Coral and Cantante and any others related(Maria Lusia/Juarez/Poquito.or new generations of babies ;-)
