OK, I am definitely new at this and need to know if I have it correct. My foal is 6 weeks old now and I figure that I should know how to get her registered. I have the breeding paperwork to submit.

1) Should I order the DNA kit now?
2) How do they do DNA - mane hair???
3) This foal is 50%+ likely to change color/gray - when should I register here? Should I wait until after she completely sheds out the first time or even longer?????
4) Do I send in the DNA and wait for confirmation before filling out the registration paperwork and sending it in to PFHA?

Anything else I should know???

Thanks!!!

Send your reg info in ,mark on it that you need a DNA test kit. It will arrive in the mail. Collect hair sample ( I prefer hair from the base of the tail). Send the hair sample to UC Davis and send the other form that gives the sample collection date back to PFHA. All of the addresses are included and it is actually pretty self explanatory.

It's least expensive to do the registration before the foal is six months old. You'll have to send photos and register the color the foal is now. (If there is already solid evidence of gray, I think you can use that -- otherwise, use whatever the present "base" color is.) You can change the color later, if she turns gray. I've been told color changes are free (although I guess they could change that anytime).

Yes..register before six months of age for the "best deal"..you can change the color later if need be.
go to pfha.org and download an application. You can order the DNA kit before you register and get that out of the way now if you would like to wait a few months brefore you register. That way, the DNA will already be on file.

The current fee schedule is also on the site at pfha.org.
If you are going to microchip, you can order that too.

PS..ALWAYS make yourself a copy of the application you send in. I send all my reg apps with a return receipt also. I want somebody to acknowledge and sign for my reg apps... that way, if its taking months and you haven't heard anything and they say you have to resubmit (at a higher fee) you have proof you already DID submit... ;-)
