I have a trainer from Germany coming to talk to me about working with our horses. She is a very good trainer but has no experience with gaited horses. She trains English and does a lot of dressage. Janina worked with one of our geldings and she really liked him but she would like to learn more about training gaited horses. There are no gaited trainers or clinics up here so I would like to get some good training videos for her.

We are not interested in producung show horses. I want my horse to be relaxed trail mounts, that travel quitely in gait! I bought the Parelli gaited horse program, and I was not all that impressed. I have the Robin Rattliff training videos. I do like some of her stuff, but it is very specific to Paso Fino show horses.

I do not want to waste my money on junk. I would really like to find a good gaited horse training program to help this lady out so that she can work with more of my horses. Any suggestions?

Thanks

We have 4 new babies this year waiting on one more. I don't have pictures yet. I guess I need to do that. We have a fantastic buckskin colt. a beautiful red dun filly with 4 socks and a blaze face, a bay filly with 4 high white socks and a blaze face that looks just like her dad, Sueldo, and a big red bay colt. The last mare is due soon.

Are you coming to see us for the Paso Friends ride in August?

I have heard that Larry Whitesell has good training videos, but I have not seen them myself. He does have a web site and you can order the videos there.

I have the Clinton Anderson Gaited Horsemanship series, and it is very good. He uses 2 TW horses with 2 different behavior and gaiting problems. Then he shows you exercises to do on the ground, then in the saddle. Most of the exercises are for suppling, flexing, etc The video shows how the horses improve over a 4 week time span. It is really amazing. His premise is that most gaiting issues will improve with the suppling. He basically does the same exercises with non-gaiting horses. The TW improved greatly just within 1 week. And he says the videos are for basic pleasure training, not for showing.

The new Larry Whitesell videos are excellent. They are step-by-step, very easy to understand, and they are broken down so you can watch what you want when you want. There are both ground and in-saddle exercises.

OH Rose you know I would love to come, I was so jealous of all the nice pictures you showed on your last get together. they were great, such great riding at your place.
I can hardly wait to see those babies of yours, be they are beautiful.
Here is a picture of Sueldo sister and her son. I can't beleive she is 18 yrs old and her son is 10yrs. But I think he has finally grown up, no more wanting to hurry home on a ride, but just really enjoys being out, he is great, I am afraid he is my favourite to ride, course I do still take Bree out, its good for her to get out also. So much green grass here, they are allowed out only once a day for two hours in the evening, and hay in the morning.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Do I have to buy the other training videos from Clinton Anderson before I can use his gaited horses videos? I found the Parelli videos kept refering back to other Parelli videos.

Lynne you just will have to find a way to join us this August long weekend. We would love to have you! I will try to get some baby photos this week while I am off.

hi rose, no, you wont have to buy all of clinton's videos. he covers enough of his basic program in the gaited horse video, so you should be able to follow it pretty easy.

Rose, If you are wanting to just train for trail riding, Dressage is a wonderful background for any horse. Teaches the horse how to listen to you and you to him. I have just retrained my Paso Mare, using dressage techniques. She is much more supple and subtle. It takes alot less pressure to acheive my goal. She was somewhat of a go getter and I sent her to Miami to be bred, and the trainers down there rode her and they got her fino-ing.....not what I wanted on the trail...she was so hyped when I got her back, I had to do something to calm her down. I have a friend who was in dressage for many years. She has helped me to relearn to ride with dressage techniques and retrained my horse by dressage techniques and both my mare and myself are much better for it. Dressage training is a good basic training for every horse.

So you may not necessarily NEED to have any special training tapes for your new trainer. Unless you are having a specific problem with gaiting issues. If it is a young horse, it may take some time for them to "find" their gait. JMHO

Good luck! :D

Thanks Cowboy Ed/ I will look int his videos.

Paso Mom, Thanks for the advice. In the past I trained all my own horses but lately I just do not have the time. With 35 horses, a full time job and teenagers, I really need a good trainer to get my horses started. This young lady from Germany is really good, but she knows absolutley nothing about gait. I need to find some videos that will help her. She has never even rode a gaited horse before so I need something that will teach her about gaited horses. I know that if she can blend her dressage background with some gaited horse knowledge she will be able to produce some awesome horses. In Germany she just worked in areans, with show horses. Developing trail horses will be a bit different for her. However she is really excited about working with my horses, and I am excited about it too!

Rose... Clinton Anderson is really good...he is no-nonsense and gets great results.... he is one of my favorite trainers....I have to back Ed up on this with my support... and Clinton is right that suppling does indeed help get the best gait. I have some DVD's that show many Paso Finos...in the show ring, on the trail, etc.... not specifically "training"..but may be helpful for your young lady from Germany...PM me your mailing address....lets discuss it in PM's...

Yep...Parelli will try to hook you for many other videos to refer to... $$$
Ca-ching-ca-ching! $$$$ no need for that... ;-)
