Horseman's Dictionary (from "The Colombian Paso Fino Horse" by Jamie Mejia)

Abierto de Capones - When, while observing from behind while in motion or standing, a big space between the hock joints is noticed.

Agitate - Alborotar - Excite with excess the brio of a horse.

Bad Plumbing - Desaplomado - When due to plumbing deficiency, the horse's faults are observed when the animals are in movement or still.

Bit - Freno - Metal instrument that is introduced in the mouth of the horse, over the bars of the mouth and above the tongue, and serves to control the animal. It is composed of shanks, spoon, laster, bit knob and curb chain; it is held to the nape of the neck by of means of its corresponding head stall.

Blubber Lipped - Belfo - The horse that has a longer lower lip, or the upper denture and jaw bone are shorter than the lower one.

Boca de Trapo - This name is given to the example that does not have the sufficient support in the mouth.

Bosal - Bozal - The part that goes over the animals nose.

Bosal Curb - Barbada - The part that joins the muzzle by it's two rings, paled under the jaw of the horse.

Brow Band - Frentera O Testera - An element that is placed on the face of the horse and has the function of preventing the headstall from falling to the neck.

Brio - Power, spirit, grace, vigor, impulse, decision. The natural disposition to quickly obey the riders orders.

Bucking - Agacharse - When the horse puts it's head between the forelegs and kicks up it's heels.

Cabecear: It is said of that animal that when mounted and in movement, roughly moves the head, trying to snatch the rein from the rider. Generally they do this when they feel uncomfortable with the bit or when they are improperly trained.

Cabestrear: When a horse allows itself to be , led ina docile manner by the halter or lead line.

Cabezada: The piece of leather that, passing by the nape of the neck, sustains the bosal and the noal curb.

Cabos: Rear and Fore legs of the horse when the color of the limbs are to be named, or a quality or fault.

Camping Under - Remeter: Enter the feet within itself.

Careto: When the white spot of the face touches at least two thirds (2/3) parts.

Chambuque: A loop formed by the rawhide or lasso when it is thrown to catch a horse.

Chaps - Zamarros: The wide leather trouser that protect the rider from the horses sweat, as well as from the mud. The colombian rider also uses them to obtain greater elegance over it's breast.

Cheek - Carrillos: The fleshy part of the face.

Chuparse: When the horse contracts as if going to buck in a rapid and rough manner.

Desbarrigar: Action of passing the girth towards the back.

Descosquillar: When the horse is accustomed to being touched all over.

Diagonal: The set of opposite rear and fore leg and left rear leg set of opposite rear and fore leg.

Dorsal Stripe - Raya de Hula O Cordon de Mula: Black or brown colored line on the back of the animal. It goes from withers to the tail.

Headstall of the halter - Jaquima: The set of pieces that serve to hold an animal from the head. It is composed of the following parts:

Height - Alzada - the height of a horse as it is measured from the withers to the ground.

Hogadera: It is placed by the headstall and throat latch of the halter, and seves to prevent the horse from easily pulling the headstall away.

Jarrete: Hock of the horse.

Jettera: a device made of soft rope or horse hair that is used prior to training with a bit. It is wrapped around the horses lower jaw (hold the tongue down) and tied under the chin. Reins are then attached.

Lateral Movement: Movimiento Lateral: The set of same side rear and fore leg.

Lead line- Pisador: It holds the slip throat latch of the halter headstall and serves to lead or tie the horse.

Lerdo: a horse with little courage, heavy, slow.

Leading leg - Bipedo Dominate: It is the one that gives the impulse and determines the origin and classification of the gait. It is formed by a rear and fore leg when they fall to the ground, at the same time or in the support order.

Limbs Posterior - Miembros Posteriores: The rear legs.

Lunanco: It is said of the horse that has a croup higher on one side than the other.

Mamones: The foal's teeth at it's first age, that is the milk teeth.

Meter La Cola: When the horse puts it's tail between the rear legs.

Montura: The proper seat to ride a horse. It is formed by a wooden frame, iron, etc. that is covered in leather. It is composed of the following parts.

Rump or Crupper

Neck Flexing - Quebrar: The act the trainer carries out in order to loosen the horses neck muscles when he begins training or when he is in the process of training.

Nosing Out - Destapado: When the horse being in progress carries the neck and head in the lengthend position, without having the contraction, elegance and posture that is expected of our horses.

Ojo De Plata O Argel: When the horse has a glass eye.

Packsaddle - Bastos: The part of the saddle that protects the animal from the bows of the saddle, and fixes it on the animals back, Generally they are filled with horse hair or elements that may provide softness.

Volateria: When the horse is within the gait.

Zebra Stripes - Acebrado: stripes in the rear and fore legs, similar to those of a zebra.
